Great pictures. I have rabbits and guinea pigs and it seems like it is a lot easier to sex the guinea pigs than the rabbits. I have a pregnant female pig, who when she has her babies, I can sex them easily with the pictures.

Thanks for these pictures, they've confirmed my sons guinea pig, who we thought was a he, is a she and is prob pregnant as she is getting fatter by the day.

This is a good thing - my guinea pig had 4 babies last night and I wouldn't have a clue how to sex them so this is just fab. Nothing odd or sick about not wanting any more pregnancies. Thanks for the help....

"Somewhere in Alabama", please realize that if you have animals, sometimes there is going to be some unpleasant stuff that has to be done. Finding out the sex of your animals is not always easy, and these pictures help. You're the one labeling it as "nasty" and "sick". A responsible owner needs to know, to ensure males and females are kept separate.
| Paula | Thu, 1 Oct 2009 2:43PM |
I thought both of my GP's were female - until last night when I realised one of them is heavily pregnant! The male one does not have any protrudence like your photos, they both look exactly the same on the outside, but you can feel testicles on one of them.. they are around 5 months old. So make sure if they LOOK female - feel just under the genitals for anything resembling testicles. I'm in shock!

Great pictures and easy to follow instructions. I was able to sex my 2 week old gps. Thankyou

this is a great site! I have one guinea pig we adopted from a pet store where they told me it was a male. We recently got two females, but live in a very small town with no small animal vets. Your site helped me to determine the sex of all 3 pigs, and I am pretty sure they are all females, but I am still worried about putting them together because I really don't want any unwanted babies. What is the best way to introduce them to each other and how do I determine if they really are all females?

Wow, great pictures...what a relief I thought I was given a boy and a girl when I asked for two girls, but you really cleared up any doubt Thank you so much great job, i had read about it but so much easier this way, keep up the great info.

Thank you so much for your informative and VERY helpful website. The pictures are very clear and precise making it much easier to tell :) I went to 3 websites but ended up using yours to make the call on the sex of our babies.

this was really helpful, because, like you said, sometimes there are mistakes! Thank you soooo much!

Thank you so much for the excellent descriptions and photos...it was a breeze to correctly ID my rescue as an intact male...no one at the pet store could tell me. I will def forward this site to all that need some help!

| jimbob | Sat, 7 Mar 2009 4:57PM |

| Brittany | Wed, 25 Feb 2009 9:29AM |
This was very helpful! Thank you so much, now I know I have to girls to take care of. :)
| cynthia | Wed, 18 Feb 2009 9:09PM |
HELP. Although you have many great photos on your website... I still can not tell what sex our babies are. Since all three of our babies have exactly the same genitals... I know there are either 3 girls or 3 boys. I don't feel any shaft, and I can't get anything to "come out". But I am still not convinced they are girls. The mound at the top of the y is kind of pointy.. maybe the penis is 'hiding' within that point? These babies are 2 weeks old...and I know that you need to separate boys from girls at 3 weeks old. I keep checking EVERYDAY...
| chazz | Wed, 18 Feb 2009 7:06AM |
geeszz!! i can't identify in my pigs who's the male & the female. I receive them as a gift last christmas. i think they're 2 months. Can you heLp me guys?? xoxo

I bought a new g-pig on the weekend from a pet store, I tried to sex it myself and I couldn't get anything(penis) to stick out, so I thought it was a girl. I asked one of the workers to sex it and she said it was a girl. Today I tried to sex it and got what looks like a penis to stick out...... hummmm.... I guess I gotta change it's name now!
| Ashley | Sun, 30 Nov 2008 6:31PM |
I tired checking my babies today and I didnt really suceed at anything other than getting a few scrathes. guess i will try again at 3 weeks old! the website is a great help though i look here everyday for information that could be useful!

This is important information and worthy of all scientific detachment and you are to be commended for doing such a superior job. However, I must say that in picture #22, pig 10 has the most adorable "Say WHAT?" look on his face.

ive just purchased 2 babies guineas about 5weeks-3months old and i was told they were female but 1 seems to have testicles but no penis :S is this just a little thing that will clear up?

OMG I've been calling my guinea pig Mu [Mufasa is "his" full name] thinking my little one was a boy for so long. I feel like a very bad parent... I shoulda named it a unisex name like Sam or something lol.

I would like to say that not all pet stores are that bad. I got my beautiful cavy at my local PetSmart ( which has an in house vet) and an awsome small animal care giver named Nick. I know from specking with the store and dis. managers that all cavies sold from PetSmart stores are MALE. I couldnt be more happy with my new little boy. His name is SYDNEY. ( sid)

I am so happy about this guide! I was worried my pig might be a male since we got her from a pet shop. (A REALLY REALLY REALLY good petco) and I was worried she may have been a male. But she is definetly a female. Thanks Cavy Spirit!

Hi, I bread from my guinea pig last October. She had a healthy brood of 3 female piggies. I have just watched her deliver again (I missed her in October). She had just 1 baby, I surprised as she looked so big. The baby is doing well and so is mum, very big baby though. I am just waiting for my other sow (the baby girl born in October) to deliver hers. I am unsure how far gone she is but I dont think it will be too long. I love this website and well dont to all the good work you put in. I would love to do something like you do, but I am so busy with a part time job, 4 childre, nusband, dog, parrot and 4 regular guinea pigs (not including any babies they produce). Thank you.

Hi, My female guinea pig got accidentally pregnant because one of my boys sneaked into her cage! It was so fast I was too late. She however fortunately had 3 healthy babies (1 died though). The 3 babies are now about 4-5 weeks old. I definately checked their genitals....and 2 of them are boys, 1 is a girl. But none of the boys are showing any mounting behaviour at all! Neither do they rumble at all. I have 10 guinea pigs and I love them so much. I have taken care of baby guinea pigs of my own before and the boys rumbled at 3 weeks so it was obvious they were boys. But this bunch...don't want to leave their mum and they don't want to stop having her milk. Another problem is...the mum won't let me take the babies away! She cries desperately for the babies back and even the (supposedly male) babies cry desperately for their mummy. But since I was so concerned for the mum, I took the boys away and the mum was so desperate she actually jumped out of the cage! and I was so concerned if I separate her from the babies, she will go looking for them at night.

What a fantastic web site, sounds we are not alone when we purchased a female, with hidden bundles inside !! our little Dora was only 10wks old when we got her along with her 4 so called sisters !! hmm that definatley wasnt the case either !! We were worried sick, as not knowing how far gone she was, it was down to day by day, we are so pleased to announce that she had 5 healthy babes, and they including mum are all doing well.

Thank you very much for your brilliant website. I am now the proud owner of 11 guinea pigs due to a multitide of pieces of poor advice from pet shops! Luckily I am pet mad so it is not a huge problem but I am keen not to expand my collection further so your website has been invaluable in sexing the new babies. One of the new batch was born with only one eye and is blind in the other. She is underweight as cannot follow Mum easily so we have been up every 2 hours to make sure she gets enough food. The whole family is praying that she pulls through. Even my gruff and tough husband has been giving her extra feeds and geting up in the night. Fingers crossed.

I had purchased a rescued "baby" pig at a local ranch store, little did I know, she was pregnant. My young pig, Molly, gave birth on Mothers Day to 4 babies, one was a runt that died shortly after. The babies and mom are healthy and I thank you for this website! Very informative!

I am a Companian animal specialist for Petco and we would never miss sex a guinea pig. They must be 6-8 weeks old when they come to us. Be sure to mention "some" pet stores. We always make sure the customer knows everything they need to know for a happy life for their new companion.

i love cavy's i hav three now and i adopted one from a little girl who was blind and could no longer take care of him his name is dezzy he is now 4 years old and he is extremely healthy. He is a roan. I also own a female who i adopted from a family that had 5 and had to find homes for them buy the end of the week. i was able to give 3 homes but they were so pourly cared for at old homes that they had to be put to sleep within a week of me owning them. One of the females that i got from themn was pregnant and i alaready new when i got her but i kept it a secret until she had 6 babies 2 days later. (my parents do not visit my room often. She gave birth to 3 males and 3 females. I found amazing homes for all but 1 who like to bite which i hav named rasberry. Her mother, teddy bear, is an abbysinian and rasberry is also an abbysinian. Now rasberry is 4 months old and pregnant with her first litter. Dezy is the father and after this litter he will be neutered. Rasbery si more than likely pregnant with more than 3 babies because it runs in her family. Her mother had either 5 6 or 7 babies in all of her litters (5 total) and rasberry is expected to hav more.

we just love guinea pigs!we are adults and still find these amazing creatures loveable and priceless. the only fault with guinea pigs is their lives are too short and vets in australia(south australia) have no idea how to treat them. we treat our guinea pigs better than ourselves. we have them inside and enjoy every minute with them. they each have a personality of their own and we wouldn't live with out guinea pigs now. they are the best animals!

Thank you so much for all the advice you have put on this site. I have visited quite a few others and they don't even compare to this 1. I already had 2 female piggy's and have adopted 2 more baby girl piglets which nobody wanted (I don't know why as they are so cute!) I followed your instructions when I introduced them all and they are now like 1 big happy family! Now Tufty, cotton ball, rosie and coco (my daughter named them) are all living happily together. Once again thank you for all your help.

Well, we are learning about the world of guinea pigs fast! Your site is unbelievably helpful. We were given a pig, cottonball 2 years ago, she is lovely, calm, stoic. We then gave in and took on two more guinea pigs that we were assured were both females as company for Cottonball, needless to say Miss Mo, is really Mr. Mo, and Miss Squeally had her first (and only) litter of two 8 weeks ago. Bear and Caramel are very cute. It was heart wrenching to seperate Bear at three weeks but we had to do it. Today him and his dad hang out. Cottonball is due with her litter any day now. (We didn't know Mr. Mo was a guy remember) Today we put her in her new cage with all the bells and whistles awaiting the joyous event. Miss Squeally and Caramel are in a cage beside. We don't know if she has had a litter so I'm somewhat nervous about her delivery. Having a family of vets at my beck and call definitely helps. So.... I'm hoping that all goes well and this will be the end of pigs at our house. We do adore them. (Daddy only tolerates them). The cats like to visit through the window, the gerbil and bird get a visit on occasion and the pug couldn't care less about anyone but herself! Cheers, thank you for your invaluable advice.

Thank you ever so much for the helpful advice on sexing guinea pigs and the clear photos, exactly what I need as someone called me yesterday for help. He has rather a lot of baby piggies as he has failed to separate the sexes early enough. I hadn't a clue as I am fairly experienced with rabbits but have never kept piggies. I have never been able to tell if a guinea pig is a boy or a girl because my last guinea pigs we got from a frined. The pet store that we bought our now living guinea pigs from is working out better. I looked to see if I could tell if they were boys or girls and they were what the pet store said they were... girls. I knew that they were probably right because they are our friends, but I wanted to look for myself. Thanks for the pictures I recognised how to look for it when the pictures were displaying. I have been using your cage ideas and my guinea pigs are 100% happy with it.

I separated them but the girl got pregnant again, so i had them proffessionally looked at and left the young male with mom and sister. Unfortunatley the young male died in september but having JUST looked in the cage there are 2 more babies- is it possible they are from the one that died he was only about 4 and half weeks old??? If not I dont know whats happened.

Well well well... Got my Guniea Pigs from PetSmart. Where they guarantee that all pets are female. One about 5 months before the other. The second pig apparently came into (and then when out of) the store pregnant. That issue has been resloved, (75% a new cage, bedding, food and toys for the new pigs) I still found your site to be more helpful in determining what else we needed to do. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for the info. This website was really helpful, and I have learned more on how to identify the sex of the guinea pig at an earlier age. I can't wait to see what my female will give birth too. So that I can let others know what sex they are. Again thank you for this information.

what is the life expectancy of a male guinea pig? Our guinea pig is a very much a part of our family. His wanders the yard during the day with our dog and pet pot belly pig and is in with the family at night. He is about four years old and I just discovered what feels like a fatty lump on his side. Is this common in a guinea pig this age. Thank you from a very concerned guinea pig family. Lisa

Ok. I'll try this method at home but some of those pictures you still can't tell whether it's a boy or girl. I have a two preg piggies at home cause even my retarded vet got it wrong. Sexing is difficult. You think if I took pictures when the babies are born you could tell me??? I'm keeping all the babies and I've built an enormous cage for the bunch once they are born. I'm going to keep girls on the top floor and boys on the bottom floor but I've got to know their sexes before I seperate them! Wish me luck.
| aun't | Sun, 20 Nov 2005 4:52PM |

We had our first two sows deliver in the same week! 8 babies! I'm totally confused sexing them althiugh your photos are very helpful. The older litter is one week old and I still cannot tell them apart. Hopefully by three weeks they will have the clear identifications I see in your photo journal. Thanks for being so helpful!

Jessica, female cavies don't have periods. Instead, every 2 weeks, she comes into 'heat'. The only noticeable difference is that her genitals are slightly larger than normal, and she may try to mount other piggies more often (or other piggies try to mount her and sniff her bum more than usual).

Dofemale guinea ppigs have periods?
| Kat J | Fri, 1 Jul 2005 10:41AM |
I was wondering if perhaps you could add pictures of a female in heat? I believe fairly strongly that I have two females, but I put them together and they tried to get it on.... I'm wondering if it's because one is in heat? She looks different and I'm not sure what that means.... thnxs

A usefull guide to sexing piggies. Isn't it a bad idea to have male piggies neutered though, piggies tollerate anaesthetics poorly and there is a high mortality rate associated with the procedure.
| Amber | Wed, 23 Mar 2005 3:20PM |
That helps....isn't it kind of obvious though??
| Shelby | Tue, 22 Mar 2005 4:10PM |
Thank you for the information and the various pictures of sexing pigs at various ages. Disregard the immature comment made on the 19th about it being like "guinea pig play boy." I applaud you for trying to help others out to prevent homeless piggies in this world.
| Bobbie | Tue, 22 Mar 2005 12:47PM |
Well, this site definately has a lot of useful information....you can pretty much consider my home a 'rescue'. Right now I have 7 little piggies that people had to give up for different reasons. Our original, Pumba, was purchased as a pet for my 2 sons...they can never get out of feeding him because he gets quite vocal if they pass him off (that is one of the reasons I got him for the boys..I grew up around guinea pigs and they will "tattle"!) But, I have a mommy and 3 3 week old babies, and 2 other adult males. I do have to admit that I did not realize a boar can make babies at such a young age!! I do have plenty of cages and supplies..I am always picking things up at flea markets and yard sales. So, if I can be of any help to anyone, I am in the Beaver County area of PA. Just let me know. But again, thatnks for taking the time to post such an invaluable site. This definately took a lot of time and effort. And to everyone out there.....Have you hugged a piggie today ?!?!?!

I bought 2 females from Petsmart only to find out that one was a male. We are due to have babies in about 8 weeks. I want to find good homes for them all. We certainly can't keep them all. I could keep the mother and all the daughters, but the father and any brother will have to go!!! Unless there are more boys, I like the boys better actually. THey seem to be more fun!

We bought a female guinea pig that was too young to have babies...she had them three in a half weeks ago! I was told(from the pet store) that guinea pigs would not start reproducing until at least three months. Needless to say he is off by himself tonight. Anyone know if he can be put in a smae cage with the others as long as the cubes are between them?? Would he still be able to mate between the holes in the cubes? He seems lonley tonight.

To Michelle Taylor: Please read http://www.cavyspirit.com/breeding.htm to see why breeding your pig is dangerous, unnecessary, and contributes to the guinea pig population of the US. Please adopt a same-sex companion for your pig from a shelter or rescue instead.

Thank you! It's always frustrated me to go to pet stores and fine the wrong sex in the wrong cage. Thanks for the fantastic educational tool! Keep up the good work!

Yowza! What a useful tool! We have been keeping our daughter's school's rabbit and guinea pig (newly from the pet store) over the summer. To everyone's amazement (including the pig's), the pig produced three babies one Sunday morning, almost exactly four weeks ago. We'd read elsewhere that pigs reach sexual maturity at two months--glad to have found your site now rather than later. Let's hope we're all still in the clear....

I'm so glad to find a website that's not afraid to put enough pictures to help the reader determine the correct sex. My female gave birth to three boys. I 'm glad I knew how to tell, I wouldn't have wanted to keep them with her too long!

we have 2 adolescent cavies of the same age. my boyfriend and his brother said they were both males so we kept them in the same cage. but one, the bigger one always tries mate the smaller one. but the smaller one seems to resist and behaves violently (while squeeling) when ever the bigger one is in heat. i put the smaller one in her mom's cage but the mom will soon give birth and i need to put it back on the old cage. im am scared to put it back because we already lost one cavy (male) when another male had sex with it. help please.

Thanks to your site, I have correctly sexed my cavy (she's female, but I was told she was male). Thanks so much! Now I can keep her safe from unintended pregnancies by getting her a female companion!

I bought second cavie a month ago, and was told it was a male. But I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed a female with your help. Thank you so much! Now I will not leave her alone with my male. I hope I am not too late to stop a population explosion. (03/23/04)

Thanks!! We aquired a female at Christmas only to find out she was pregnant. A shock but very fun. We have 3 healthy babies but I needed to know EXACTLY how to tell the sex. The pictures were extremely helpful. Now they can go to their new homes with the confidence of knowing if they are male or female.
