I am about too complete a full restoration on my J24 hull #6. Its been cray and fun. I am Awl Gripping the deck and topsides this month and will post some pics when its done. Its been a long haul, I had the deck floating 2" above the hull at one point. You have done a very nice job, I understand what work and effort you have put into your boat. Cheers and happy sailing.

Beautiful job! I did one this past winter, it already had the verm job done. My boat is  #1837 Grey Fox (after R.E.Lee)and is painted medium Grey with a light grey deck! I love the pictures of it on the water, the grey is incredible! I know you will enjoy the heck out of that boat, I know I do! Keep it flat!

Rich,

Great Job!

Quick question:  How thick was the core material you used in the deck?

I was in Defender in Waterford, CT today and noticed 4 Schaefer chainplate covers hanging on the wall. If they are useful to other J24 owners in your area check defender.com, call them and they'll certainly send them to you.

This is an incredibly useful site!  You have answered so many of my questions in one web visit.  Thanks for putting this site together for the J24 community!  I have a question about photo 126 when you have time to read it.  Thanks again.

Mars - I fixed the hatches the best I could, fashioned new slide pieces on each hatch and did new slide rails with aluminum.  I think the Waterlines $2.5k kit is for conversion to the new-style sea hood companionway.   - Rich

We are working on a J/24 upgrade. What did you do about the companionway hatch. Waterlines wants $2500 for a new hatch kit.

Great Job. I'm helping my son restore hull # 825 (year 1978). Lots of work that creats pains where you didn't know you could get them.

Question: What did you use to replace the companion way hatch slides (the 1 inch batten type material that the hatch rides on)? Yours looks like it is new.

Wow! it's really great. I think you have  a great talent to fix it!!
I have an old j24 looking pretty old.
It was made in japan 1984 and I have a plan to repaint it.
Especially non skin deck and hull should be problem because
I don't know how to make it and lack of information (here is South Korea). Among these environment your picture will be great
helpful for me. Thanks for your nice job!

Looks like you have completed a heck of a lot of work and it looks great. I am in the process of fixing my 1983 J24 that I bought last year. Started off last spring by patching visible holes and dings in the sides and a quick coat of paint to get it in the water. Pulled it last fall and stored in a warehouse where I was going to do topside non-slip. Still have not got out of the interior (wet hull and broken tabbing etc.) I see many similarities between the boats. Job well done.

USA#140 looks great!  You site is a veritable treasure trove of information.  I have similar issues with USA#66, and know your site will help "coach" me through my efforts.  Cheers!

WOW! I am so happy I found the J24 extreme makeover man!!! I am gearing up to paint my 1978, hull #651. I have some questions on paint and primer (type/brands), surface preparation (sanding old gel coat, etc.), order of work for painting the deck and entire hull. Please email me at cneefus@msn.com. I plan on starting my project this month. P.S. Did you make your own toe rail? If so, where do I find the teak wood?

Great site & info for anyone restoring a J/24 (or any other boat). I check in pretty often to keep up on the progress.

Nice to see you went 'old school' with the teak toerails. :-)

Please read the vermiculite article http://www.j24class.org/usa/faqs/verm_repair.htm
You may have some keel movement without installing the keel supports. The first two seem rather important.
I have a 78. My deck was as bad as yours. My bulkheads were all rotten and were replaced, the deck to hull joint was unbolted and cleaned and resealed. I am now changeing the hatch's to the current style. You have done a wonderful job

proud owner of hull 555, your work is beautiful! I hope I can get mine to look this good.

C.J.Tue, 28 Feb 2006 7:35PM

Amazing job!!! May be a dumb Q but how and what did you fill deck holes with? from the top or bottom? Thanks C.J. 1382.

Very cool. Doing a deck job on a 78 in Philadelphia.  I’m hoping to avoid recoring, phew!  Nice work though.  Really appreciate being able to see your progress.

I see now that I worked through the entire album.  I am really impressed.  you have given me a lot of insight!.  What paint did you use to do the non skid?

MikeFri, 4 Nov 2005 7:48AM

Nice work.  I am doing the same thing on a 78 in Michigan.  Currently replacing bulkheads.  What thickness plywood did you use?
