I love this site! My daughter has been begging for guinea pigs for her 9th birthday and I wasn't convinced until I found all the great info on this site and the pictures of cages, etc. Thank you to everyone who's added to the site! We built our grid cage tonight and will get the coroplast tomorrow. We are getting our piggies in 2 wks!

Hi I'm Katelyn. I'm fifteen and last August I got two male guinea pigs (Midnight and Nutty). I want to build a grid cage but for the bottem keep the litter pan I have now. I want to have atleast two stories. The cage I have is kinda small for my piggies and I have a large wood hidey house, two food bowls, two water bottles, and toys. I don't know the exact measurements of the cage. Can someone email me at xobellax3italian@aol.com and tell me where to buy the grids, how to make the cage, how I would open it, and what I'd make the ramp of? I can send pictures of my cage now if you'd like.

Hi, we just built our C&C cage. We adopted two bonded males. We have a 2x3 bottom grid space with a loft area above that is 1x3. We put the hay and food upstairs as a feeding area so that the boys have the downstairs for play and sleep. I used Coroplast to make a ramp and glued strips for gribs onto it. (I had to throw some hay on the ramp so they would get used to going up and down). I found the best deal on the cubes at Bed, Bath & Beyond ($14.99/set); Coroplast ($10.60 for 4x8 piece). Lids are shelves you can buy at Home Depot/Lowes (get tips to cover the ends) which ran about $7-8. I've started out using the fleece bedding and they love it :) It's reuseable -- you just sweep the poops and wash 1x week with white vinegar. Hope this helps. Don't have a picture of cage yet, but it's a guinea condo with cuddle cups/tunnels, etc :) We also built a wood table to get the entire cage off the floor with storage underneath.

Hi there! These look to be great piggie cages! I used to have piggies, but now I have ratties & I'm wondering if it's possible to get a smaller wire/grid spacing on these same grids for smaller critters??? Please get back to me as we're expaning our rescue & if we could get more cage space for the same amount of money that would be fantastic!!! Thank you for your time! -Jennifer

I love all the designs of the cages. I will be getting 3 piggies soon 1 mother and her two babies and the way the cages are situated it looks so homey and confortable. I like the hands on creativity of the cages they are all built with care and love and alot of thought.

LOL i love how every time they talk about putting a top on a C&C cage they call it cat proof, I wish that were the reason i needed a lid on mine. I seem to have an extremely adventurous piggie(I call him Super Pig as a joke) that likes to jump off things and is smart as a whip. He would be in his C&C cage all of two seconds before he realized he could climb up the side and jump off the top, lol. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Chewie the Super Pig, LOL.

i,m 43 and rescued 2 boys from the petstore. i aabsolutely adore them and want to give them the best home possible and possibly rescue more in the future. i had a piggie named JJ when i was 13 who i miss and still think about. there are 2 things in life i can't tolerate: abuse of innocent children and abuse of animals. i want to state that i truly admire and respect cavy spirit and thank them whole heartedly for their hard work and dedication to the well being of the cavy. their website i reference frequently for advise on bedding, housing, feeding and caring for my boys-ben and jerry. i built a house out of the panels and connectors that resemble a house that has 3 levels and a front door. however i am in the experimental stage of defining what will work the best as far as giving them more than adequate space, yet easy for me to maintain without comprising their safety and health otherwords, i am changing its design until i am satisfied. so, this sight really helps me. i work full time but once i am able to cut back on my hours, i would like to begin a cavy rescue.

Thanks to all for sharing your inspiring ideas. You make solving some 'problems' much easier. I didn't know what to do about several issues, such as where to squeeze cage space into my home, and covering/securing cage to control children's overly enthusiastic pig play. Now I see many ideas, and a fresh attitude. Rather than 'sacrificing' a large amount of space for the pigs, it now seems like providing an interesting and attractive environment for these fascinating, affectionate buddies who we are priviledged to provide care for. I had considered hanging the cage on the wall, in a corner (shelf-like). Because of this fabulous site, I am open to more creative ideas. I like the way some cage creators made a grid 'pedestal' below their animals' home, which doubles as storage. These set-ups would also be easily moveable and not require hardware, mounting, etc. that my shelf-on-the-wall idea did. Thanks everyone! So nice to find a place where people are helping one another and doing things without anyone making a fat profit, charging $ for information, etc. Cool!

I love this site. So many ideas. I looked for coroplast but all I found was the yard sale signs made out of it so I bought a bunch of them and glued them together to make the tray and than covered it with contact paper. It works great!

this is the site of some pretty creative people. We've been wanting to make a larger home for our adored piggie, and now i know just how we will accomplish this. Looks like it'll be a lot of fun too. Thanks so much for the inspirations.

I am puzzled over the fact that it is almost impossible to find good cages, premade!!! Petstores may sometimes have large enough cages for guinea pigs, but are expencive (im talking $200!!) and i don't have that kind of money. Your tips and pictures have made it possible for me to think about building my own cavy cage. THANK YOU!

Guinea pigs are wonderful, i'm going to start a 2 x 5 soon for my three girls, they're fin in their hutch (It's for rabbits so it's extra big) But it still doesn't meet the requirements of three piggies!!! This site inspired me too make my piggies the place thry deserve!! THANK YOU!!

Your cages are awesome!!! I'm getting stuff tomorrow to build an add-on to my existing cage so that my bunny can have some extra space for activity. Great ideas!!
| Debbie | Sat, 15 Oct 2005 10:46PM |
This website helped me build a great covered cage! My 2 piggies are very happy with all the space. The old cage I had bought at the pet store was labeled large, but now it looks like a litter box pan! Sidenote: dried poplar shavings found at Co-op stores are great to use for litter. Get a huge bag for $4.99!!!!

These cages are great, Very compact, Look easy to clean. and neat and tidey to have in your home.
| Tara | Sun, 3 Jul 2005 2:19PM |
I love these cages they are SO creative, but if anyone really wants to spend the "extra money" and look like a real high-quality display, than maybe one should check cagesbydesign.com? They look huge, and a tall cage with several levels is as good as a huge one level generally, right?
| Kristi | Thu, 23 Jun 2005 12:50PM |
Only use SMALL ANIMAL SHAMPOO to bathe your guinea! Others have PH levels which are too harsh for your friend's skin. Just bath him/her like you would any other animal except with low water levels and COMPLETELY dry your cavy before it goes back into it's home.

HOW DO GIVE THE GUINEA PIG A BATH?
| Lauren | Sun, 24 Apr 2005 2:26AM |
could you please tell me where you can get the one like Katy's cage and how much it is????? lauren
| Berna | Sat, 23 Apr 2005 7:43AM |
This is directed towards Marsha. I think some of these cages are very creative and quite attractive. These well designed cages provide maximum space these little guys need which you could never get with a with a store bought cage, no matter how much you pay (trust me I know). If you are more concerned with the way a cage looks than the health and well being of your animals, then you should not have any animals. I feel embarrassed for you because you obviously have no social tact or edict and that is truly "tacky."
| Louise | Tue, 5 Apr 2005 12:05PM |
I love my cage that i made! and i have never had anyone tell me that they think they are tacky!!! and my pigs have lots of space to run around in and i know they are safe when they are in there, which is really one of the most important aspects of the cage!
| Angie | Wed, 30 Mar 2005 4:43PM |
Marsha, if you think they look tacky don't build one. I think they look bright and colorful and easy to clean. That's what makes me want to get one!
| Brytanie | Sat, 19 Mar 2005 9:48AM |
I love this website. I go on it every day after scholl. These cages are terrific.Thank you for building this website.
| marsha | Wed, 16 Mar 2005 2:02PM |
I'm sorry, but I think they look rather tacky. You guys really want that where someone will see it in your home? I prefer to spend a little more for something I dont mind showing off, as well as having a much better quality product in the long run. But, thats just me.
| lancealot102 | Sun, 23 Jan 2005 8:26AM |

I'm building a cage of this nature for my Rabbit, so I came to this site. I can honestly say that cats can be completely cowed over by smaller animals - my bun is completely dominant over both of my rather laid back older cats. The cats have also been introduced to cockatiels and rats, so they are very familiar with small animals. Don't panic just because a picture looks off natured; there is usually a story behind it that justifies the situation. By the way, I love the way you have added support on this cage. The temporary cage I have set up for Molly right now is strong, but that sucker looks like it could hold some serious weight.

This is so cool, i thought i was being original! I don't have guinea pigs but i have 2 ferrets, i made a playpen from the same materials as a socialization effort for the two! Now we're going to make the playpen into an entirely seperate cage for the younger addition!! This has to be the greatest idea since sliced bread lol! All except for we have to make a couple of modifications because my little baby ferret can get his head thru the bars.. but it won't take much to stop that.. thank you so much for having this site, the cage variations are WONDERFUL, you've given me so many ideas how to set this up!!
