I have seen this with the plastic tray cage that I bought for my piggie. I religiously cleaned the cage every week and put fresh bedding in. What can be done to prevent the build up of the "crud" that is on the bottom of the cage? I switched to a metal tray cage and it's not that bad.

Even though it IS disgusting, I don't reckon the piggy cared, and at least it had a nice roomy cage!!! But yeah, I don't think I clean my C&C cages thoroughly enough but they aren't dirty! It would be useful to know what bedding was used, how often the cage was cleaned and what (if any) liquid was used to clean the correx.

Anyone considering adopting a piggie should HAVE to look at these pics first and VOW not to ever let the cage look like this! I feel so bad for the unfortunate piggies that had to live in that! There is no reason a cage should ever look like that, or anywhere even CLOSE to that.

*Sigh* I"m sorry to say that I think the problem is more with our culture of self-absorption. Children of ten years ought to be able to provide excellent care for animals. Throughout most of history, children of ten years were on the verge of becoming young adults, and were depended upon to care for animals related to a family's income or food supply. This cage is a sad reflection on a particular family and on our current culture. However, I am grateful that there are so many pet owners who both provide excellent care for their animals and teach (key word "teach") their children to do the same.

My son is responsible for Chris, but we both clean his cage out. I know that kids won't clean like they are supposed to, so I pitch in. Those poor piggies. Chris actually complains when his cage isn't clean to his liking.

OK...that is really disgusting! My cousin was only 9 when she got her guinea pigs, and she takes much better care of them than that!

I can't believe how some people can't follow simple guide lines, and they knew they would be the sole care takers and this is what they let happen. Its a miracle that the piggies were returned to you in one piece despite the obvious neglect *cringing at the pictures*, remindes me of the hollister rescue all over again. I wish i lived in cali, i would love to have the privlege to adopt from you =0).
