Cathy, this page is getting a load of looks this week as this is a topic of discussion online. These pictures are thrilling -- love seeing them all assembled together like this -- it helps to train the eye to learn the look. Thank you x 1000!

Cathy,

I don't know if you remember me from Jewelcollect, about 15 years ago. I sold you some haskells. I am pretty sure I sold #9 to the owner. I sold it from A Link to the Past website to a customer in California.

Hi, love this site!  I have three pieces of silesian wirework on their original cards I bought years ago before anyone had ever heard of silesian wirework.  Wish there was information on the card but it only has a Greek key design.   Warm regards, Fran.

I have a ring that looks like silver.  It has a black onyx and the only real word on the inside band I can make out says BERLIN.
The rest is worn.  I do not know much more about it. I can email photos if you like.

Hi Cathy,
I'm interested in acquiring a special pair of Berlin Iron bracelets in excellent condition. Do you have any leads?

Thank you,

Rhonda Schwartz

I have an old piece of this Silesian jewelry, I think.
It was my moms and before that I am assuming my grandmother and before her, my great grandmother.

I have pictures, but not sure where to send to get verification.
I am so glad I ran across this web site I have looked for a while
to learn about the piece I have.

Hi! During my quest for the best place to sell my collection of Berlin Iron, I came across your site. My sincere compliments!
Is there a way to send you a picture of the jewels and can you recommend a trustworthy address where to sell them?

Thx in advance.

Hello Cathy,
I have been doing some of my own research on Berlin Iron and came onto your photo album by way of the image you have posted of the casting tree.  It is unusual to find images showing process.  I would be interested to know how you came upon this image and if you could elaborate on it.
You have built a very informative site.  I enjoyed it very much!

This is so cool!  I have been making wire jewelry for more than 10 years, and now I find out that wirework is a tradition in the Silesia.  My father was born in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland), the largest city in Silesia, and most of my family comes from there.  My grandmother, however, is from Berlin!

I have just recently discoverd this period/style of jewelry. I'm fascinated with it's history and look. As a costume jewelry designer it seems an apropo & timely reference for inspiration.

Hello,

At first WOW!!!!  what a great website, I absolutely love it.

I tried to find a way to contact you but unfortunately could not find one, So I will try it trough the guestbook.

I have a question regarding foto 91,92 and 93.

The Gold gab ich fΓΌr eisen ring.
Do you know If the gold on that ring is original or not, because I does not make any sense to me to put gold on a ring wich you get for giveing your gold to help finace the state/war. I would expect the ring to have no gold at all because of that, but maybe you know if the gold is of later date or original.

Hopeing for an answer, and again what a great website, I will explore it completely!!

Kind regards,
Robin ( rpmarkt@gmail.com )

I have one cameo, previously belonging to my (great?)grandmother that puzzles me just a bit. It has the delicate, scrolling wire (not stamped) and a lovely relief, but not all of the metal is oxidized. It is not black, but a lighter taint.
My mother thought the item originated in Italy, but I have not found anything matching these details until coming across your site.
My mother has other pieces, as well, that may be in some disrepair.

If able to advise, I would greatly appreciate any clues about what this item is (or not)(not , and the history of it.

I have public images of the pendant here:

Thank you!

Hello! What a wonderful, informative site. I hope you can help direct me further. I have a Silesian Wireworks purse that is badly oxidized, I do not want damage it, but I also don't want it to deteriorate further. What is the best preservation and/or cleaning method for such an item. I can send pictures upon request. Thank you for providing such great information.

Hi Cathy,
I recently purchased a Silesian wirework brooch with two different length ribbon width mesh peices I think were part of the original brooch. The closure finding is missing from the brooch back. I would like to share the pics with you for your input as to the original composition and whether I should have the brooch restored.
Regards,
Madeline

Hi Cathy:  Do you have sources of information about cleaning methods and past cleaning practices for Berlin Iron and  as well as methods of production?

Sara HeinzSun, 26 Oct 2008 1:37PM

Dear Cathy,
I can't thank you enough for posting this information and photos, as I would have probably sold this heavily oxidized (I cleaned it with a jewellers cloth -Opps!-but it still has nice dark patina),lightweight, unmarked, slightly concaved 2&1/2"x 1&1/2" ornament, with amazing detailed filigree leafy-flower motif on both sides, that is attached to a 28" continuous chain, made of the same material ~ Iron (that I found in my Grandma's button tin), in the yard sale I just had, not having a clue as to what it could be!  I would like to know more about this piece, including an approximate value (as I still need to sell it, in order to keep my Mom out of a nursing home), but, none of books that you suggest (by Anne Clifford, Shirley Bury, or Elisabeth Schmuttermeier) can be found in my Library District, and I can't afford $60.00 plus to buy one! So, I'm wondering if you would be so kind as to provide me with an e-mail address (or like), where I could send some well taken photos, that may spark a response that would help me in this matter!?! At least I had the info you provided here, from which I realized that I had something, not just pretty, but also likely to be pretty special!!    THANKS - Sara Heinz (heinz58th@comcast.net)

Hi Cathy: I have an old velveteen clutch purse that has some sort of wirework on the front of it. The wirework is of a lion walking among palm trees and other plants.  Colored threads of yarn or thick pieces of some thread is sewn underneath the wire to make it appear like the wire has some color to it.  The lion looks to be padded underneath to make him not so flat.  Can you tell me anything about this purse?  I do have photos that I could send you.  Thanks a bunch!

Hi Cathy,
I was hoping you may be able to help me, as I am doing research for my masters degree in Sussex, Uk. I am currently on a on a conservation/restoration of fine metalwork programme, and for my MA thesis am looking at ways to effectively repair Berlin Ironwork. Do you own the collection in your photos, and if so how do you currently deal with fixing broken pieces? Do you come across many broken items, or are there only perfect pieces on the market? If you could e-mail me to discuss this further I would be incredibly grateful as this information is really useful for my background research.
Thank you

Thank you for this wonderful resource! I recently purchased an ironwork purse and I think I may have found exactly the info I needed.

Kylie MillerMon, 18 Sep 2006 1:08PM

Dear Cathy,

This is the best internet resource I've found for simply seeing this type of Berlin/Iron Silesian jewelry! Those images are terrific. One question...have you ever run across a necklace done in Silesian wire WITH STONE BEADS?  I saw a neckacle of similar wire style (definitely not silver) over the weekend, but the beads looked too 1960's brown marble agate-like.  But the wire work is still on my mind! Please feel free to email me with any comments you might have on the topic of a necklace such as the one I describe.  I just might go over and buy it today just in case! Again, TERRIFIC WEBPAGE!
