I don't think that a person has to follow a link to another site. All of the information here makes perfect sense. A file is made from high carbon steel and it holds a good edge. This is what you want a good knife to do also. If you want to make a pry bar then you had better search out another material. I use my knives for cutting and over the years have made many knives from discarded files with very good results.

I was reading your article on the war sword and how it was made with old leaf spring metal, to create swords/knives/daggers, and found it very interesting. I work for SDTruckSprings.com and being
that we work with these, things all day. Its nice to see them put use rather just sit there at a scrap yard or in the wear house, and with customers always buying new leaf springs --- obviously they have
old leaf springs; so we decided to write about a trend we've spotted on your site and show our customers what some are doing with their old leaf spring metal. So we wrote an article about it which you
can find here. Hope you enjoy!

I have checked a few sites around and so far yours was the easiest and most affordable way yet. I am currently making a few myself, and i am very eager to try your tempering procedure first hand. Thanks for the tips!

Great info! I would like to suggest/mention that a radius between blade and tang would eliminate a major weak area common to knife making.

Thanks for the interest and the kind comments.  As you can probably tell already from the photo captions, I'm just a beginner at this knife-making thing.  That said, there's nothing like the feeling of making your own cutting tools like these knives - especially when starting with scrap steel.  Turning a piece of trash into something useful is a good feeling.  I really appreciate all the interactive messages left on this forum by helpful folks too.  The compliments keep me going, and the helpful information lets me learn.  So thanks again folks!  If you haven't found it already, come visit the discussion forum I run, called PaleoPlanet.  We have many forums there (mostly primitive skills type stuff - flintknapping, bowmaking, identifying and using wild edible plants, making friction fires, etc.  There's also a metalworking/blade smithing forum that is just filled with fantastic bladesmiths and generall all around good people.  A google search will find PaleoPlanet!  Tom Mills

Damned interesting article! Now that you've piqued my curiosity, I may have to try your method. Do you have any idea where your method would fall on the Rockwell scale? I would be interested in making some wood carving tools.
