End June Book Review by Adrienne Shivers

Title: Plastic Jewelry of the Twentieth Century

Author: Lillian Baker, by Updated in 2003 by Ginger Moro and Karima Parry

Published: 2004

General description: Book focuses on all types of plastics, both vintage and more contemporary and has sections on history and values.

This review will cover several categories and will include a rating for that category 1-10, 1 being 'forget it, 10 being 'must have'. There will also be a short comment about each category and then a general review at the end.

QUANTITY of PICTURES:

Comments: Lots of pictures, lots of examples, both black and white and color. Some ads included as well.

Rating: 8.0

QUALITY of PICTURES:

The pictures are clear, but some are a little small, and none show backs or alternate views. Some of the coolest pieces are in b/w, so that's a little disappointing.

Rating: 7.0

QUANTITY of INFORMATION

Comments: Pretty good amount of info in the history of plastics, the appendices are infromative, the pieces shown are dated, and there's also info on some designers as well.

Rating: 8.0

QUALITY of INFORMATION

Comments: Some mistakes or info that has since been found out was corrected and updated from previous revisions by Ginger and Karima, both of whom know their plastics. So, it's really accurate as far as I can see. Bear in mind that this book uses the more generic definitions of bakelite and celluloid, as the author clearly state. She covers the specifics in the introduction and does differentiate there, but for description on pieces, it's generic terms.

Rating: 9.0

VALUES LISTED:

Comments: Plastic values fluctuate hugely depending on market trends. Even though these values have been updated in the last 2 years, values have changed a lot even in that short time span. So, some stuff is really, really high and does not reflect today's market. But then again, today's market will change next week.

Rating: 4.0

USER FRIENDLY

Comments: No particular order to the photo gallery, you have to thumb through. You can't for example, find all the bakelite in one section.

Rating: 6.0

Total average rating: 7.0

A good general overview of plastics, worth having in the library. I do use it, there's aren't a ton of books out on plastics in general.
