NOVEMBER 2008 BOOK REVIEW
By Manon Kavesky

Title: The Art of Juliana Jewelry
Author: Katerina Musetti
Type of Book: Hard Cover
Average Price: $59.95, better pricing available on Amazon.com
In Print: Yes
Pages: 224

Brief Description of Book: A great book to help you identify the Juliana jewelry in your collection. There are more than 450 full color photos of DeLizza and Elster aka Juliana jewelry included in the Art of Juliana Jewelry. Lots of space is devoted to disclosing and illustrating the characteristics that identify Juliana jewelry. Chapters include: Coveted Cameos, Fabulous Figurals, Elaborate Easter Eggs and many more. Most pages feature 2 or three photos each with descriptions and prices.

Quantity of Illustrations: 450 + illustrations according to the press release and the introduction. Arranged 2 or three pieces to a page. There are some vintage photos of the opera star Reneta Tebaldi wearing Juliana onstage. (Surprising but true, I have been listening to her a lot recently and can recommend La Tebaldi a collection on famous arias). There are also vintage inspired photos of the jewelry being modeled by the author and others.
Score: 9+

Quality of Illustrations: Very nice photos. Most are photographed specifically for this book. A variety of backgrounds were used in the photographs. On the whole, the backgrounds compliment the pieces very well, a few I think are distracting. There are reverse views of a number of pieces! Yeah!

B/w and color illustrations: A few black and white vintage photos
Color Photos: The balance of the book
Score: 9+

Quantity of Information: There is just as much information as one would expect from such a visually driven book. Each piece is captioned, a description of the stone colors, stone shapes and the source of the piece. Sections on Identifying Juliana jewelry are very useful and well illustrated.

Is the information thorough? Yes

Comments: This is a vibrant and glowing picture book.
Score: 8

Quality of Information:
Accuracy (Mistakes?) The information seems to be correct, but I am not so much of an expert that I could spot anything more than the most glaring mistake. I do not feel qualified to give an opinion on this section.

Values Listed (Prices) Yes
Are they helpful or realistic? The author states the prices quoted were arrived at by looking at current prices (the book was compiled, last year and the prices do not reflect the financial crisis we currently find ourselves in.) There is a low and high-end price for each price. I think the prices are a little aggressive. However a true collector of Juliana jewelry would have a better feeling for this factor.

Is this book a must have? Yes

Overall comments:  I am sure most people buying this book will at some time use it to identify a piece they think is Juliana. A compendium of unmarked jewelry that has all been vetted and confirmed as Juliana is a very valuable resource. It is also a very pretty book with very photogenic pieces of jewelry.
