October 2006 - "DONE"! All key hardware is on the deck now - look for more pictures of me sailing than working. :-)
Done is in quotes since there are, of course, more things that I want to do - spinnaker rigging, rebuild V-berth, rebuild cabin floor, etc. A boat is never really done.
Pix are here in reverse order (most recent first). Occasionally I weed out older pictures - ask for a repost if I threw away something you need to see.
In response to questions I've started adding more detailed descriptions about my work - starting with the painting and bulkhead notes. Feel free to add questions or comments to any picture (and a guestbook entry so I know to look for your comments).

loved your pictures:however lost a full day of work My son and I are looking at a j24 in the atlanta area hull #123 that is for sale. just wondering if might know the boat and if so what kind of condition it may be in. Don't mind doing the work but don't want to get in over my head. Thank You Steven Case - steven case, Wed, 24 Jun 2009 7:20AM
I am about too complete a full restoration on my J24 hull #6. Its been cray and fun. I am Awl Gripping the deck and topsides this month and will post some pics when its done. Its been a long haul, I had the deck floating 2" above the hull at one point. You have done a very nice job, I understand what work and effort you have put into your boat. Cheers and happy sailing. - Steven, Mon, 9 Mar 2009 7:47AM
Beautiful job! I did one this past winter, it already had the verm job done. My boat is #1837 Grey Fox (after R.E.Lee)and is painted medium Grey with a light grey deck! I love the pictures of it on the water, the grey is incredible! I know you will enjoy the heck out of that boat, I know I do! Keep it flat!
I was in Defender in Waterford, CT today and noticed 4 Schaefer chainplate covers hanging on the wall. If they are useful to other J24 owners in your area check defender.com, call them and they'll certainly send them to you. - David Lodge | davidlodgestudios.com, Mon, 28 Jul 2008 3:17PM
This is an incredibly useful site! You have answered so many of my questions in one web visit. Thanks for putting this site together for the J24 community! I have a question about photo 126 when you have time to read it. Thanks again. - John French, Thu, 15 May 2008 2:11PM
Mars - I fixed the hatches the best I could, fashioned new slide pieces on each hatch and did new slide rails with aluminum. I think the Waterlines $2.5k kit is for conversion to the new-style sea hood companionway. - Rich - Rich, Wed, 23 Jan 2008 11:21AM
We are working on a J/24 upgrade. What did you do about the companionway hatch. Waterlines wants $2500 for a new hatch kit. R - Mars, Wed, 23 Jan 2008 10:57AM
Great Job. I'm helping my son restore hull # 825 (year 1978). Lots of work that creats pains where you didn't know you could get them.
Question: What did you use to replace the companion way hatch slides (the 1 inch batten type material that the hatch rides on)? Yours looks like it is new. - Doug Longhini, Wed, 16 Jan 2008 5:31AM
25 7/4 - Installing Stereo Initial marks on port closet.
26 7/4 - We have tunes! Installed stereo. Note "creative" speaker wire routing since wire is too short for proper installation...
27 7/4 - Behind the Music Ok, this needs some more work - and better connectors. Till then it is electrical taped together to make sure everything works.
28 7/4 - Chainplate Covers A friend is making his own chainplate covers - here's how they look next to the "official" brand.
29 7/2 - Toerail 2 This one installed much quicker. Here we're drilling the first hole.
30 7/2 - Toerail 2 1st bolt
31 7/2 - Cool Rich Just kidding - it's $#@!* hot in Georgia this summer.
34 6/24 - Toerail 1 Midst of drilling holes to mount stbd. mid toerail.
35 6/24 - Toerail 1 Closeup of screw and pre-drill alignment marks.

48 4/22 - Compass & Instrument Wiring
49 4/22 - New V-Berth Light
50 4/22 - Hairball Behind my switch panel... I'll try to get a better picture of this area.
51 4/22 - New Instrument Raymarine ST40 Bidata. It's grey - as all things on the outside of this boat should be.
52 4/9 - Inside Bow Running light wiring.
53 4/9 - Wiring Closet Routing wires to front of bulkhead. This was still "in progress" at time of photo.
54 4/9 - Wiring In v-berth, from wiring closet.
55 4/9 - V-Berth Wires Transducers, battery, anchor light wire. You can see ground wire coming out from under tabbing and going to mast step beam.
56 4/9 - New Traveler Nice!
57 4/9 - New Traveler Line end attachment.

60 3/18/2006 - Sump, More Full Almost done. Plastic blocks in the middle to create space for lifting strap shackle to go under the bar between keel bolts.
61 3/5/2006 - Sump, Partial Fill As far as I got on the 1st day.
62 3/5 - Sump, Pre-Fill View from aft. Cutting board as dam/form for epoxy.
Stuff you don't see: 1. Boat is on trailer & adjusted so that tall keel bolts are vertical. 2. Dam is angled a bit towards back of boat to leave easier access to un-filled forward sump.
63 3/5 - Sump, Pre-Fill View from forward. Note high tech dam sealant...

68 3/1 - Bulkhead Aux. tabbing on rear side. Not my best work...
69 3/1 - Bulkhead Glass in port locker.
70 3/1 - Bulkhead Rear I decided not to glass this (for now?) since I believe that epoxy between the boards and the front-side glass are very strong... but I'm honestly guessing and trying to preserve some cosmetics.
I'll paint over this with a coat of epoxy to get a nice finish.
71 2/28/06 - Prepped Bulkhead Tape outlines the area I sanded for tabbing.

89 12/11/05 - Docked, At Last! Relaunched on 12/4.
Last day of work for 2005 to install chainplates, traveller beam and hatch door.
Tested new bulkhead bottom again - hull shape changed slightly from being on trailer without good keel support. Not big, but a few millimeters here and there.
90 12/11 - Chainplate Holes Filled with epoxy linings and ready to mount chainplates.
I'll step the mast sometime early in 2006.

I may paint the hatch centers to match the non-skid color. Or maybe not - since that would diminish light inside the boat.

109 11/6/2005 - Non-Skid! w/tape left around edges for repainting hull rail + Epoxy fill on companionway slide rail holes.
110 11/6 - Non-Skid w/morning dew.
Non-skid paint is two coats of Interlux Brightside - Seattle Grey (4205). Each coat was ~1 quart of paint mixed with 6 oz. of Interlux Intergrip (2398) Non-skid.
111 11/6 - Non-skid I mixed the non-skid with the paint before painting. Pro: Allows the non-skid to soak-up/swell with paint and avoids having to overcoat afterwards. Con: Inconsistencies in non-skid texture (visible in some photos). Verdict: Good enough for me.
112 10/30/2005 - Taped ...and sanded for non-skid painting.
113 10/29/2005 - Painting Primer on whole deck. White paint on edges & hatches.
114 10/29 - Painting I painted the white first and let it spread into non-skid areas where it will be overlapped.
115 10/29 - Painting Two (2) coats of Interlux Brightside White (4359) mixed (3 paint : 1 agent) with Interlux YMA715 Flattening Agent to cut the glare a bit.
116 10/29 - Painting In retrospect I'm not sure if the flattening agent was entirely needed since the white areas aren't that large. But it helped stretch my white paint a bit. :-)
117 10/19/2005 - Primer First coat of primer - fiberglass repairs are now "gone".
Primed with 2 coats of Interlux Pre-Kote primer.
