J/24 #140 - Renovation
Restoring my sailboat in 2004-2006.

October 2006 - "DONE"!  All key hardware is on the deck now - look for more pictures of me sailing than working. :-)

Done is in quotes since there are, of course, more things that I want to do - spinnaker rigging, rebuild V-berth, rebuild cabin floor, etc.  A boat is never really done.

Pix are here in reverse order (most recent first).  Occasionally I weed out older pictures - ask for a repost if I threw away something you need to see.

In response to questions I've started adding more detailed descriptions about my work - starting with the painting and bulkhead notes.  Feel free to add questions or comments to any picture (and a guestbook entry so I know to look for your comments).

loved your pictures:however lost a full day of work
My son and I are looking at a j24 in the atlanta area hull #123 that is for sale. just wondering if might know the boat and if so what kind of condition it may be in. Don't mind doing the work but don't want to get in over my head. Thank You Steven Case

I am about too complete a full restoration on my J24 hull #6. Its been cray and fun. I am Awl Gripping the deck and topsides this month and will post some pics when its done. Its been a long haul, I had the deck floating 2" above the hull at one point. You have done a very nice job, I understand what work and effort you have put into your boat. Cheers and happy sailing.

Beautiful job! I did one this past winter, it already had the verm job done. My boat is  #1837 Grey Fox (after R.E.Lee)and is painted medium Grey with a light grey deck! I love the pictures of it on the water, the grey is incredible! I know you will enjoy the heck out of that boat, I know I do! Keep it flat!

Rich,

Great Job!

Quick question:  How thick was the core material you used in the deck?

I was in Defender in Waterford, CT today and noticed 4 Schaefer chainplate covers hanging on the wall. If they are useful to other J24 owners in your area check defender.com, call them and they'll certainly send them to you.

This is an incredibly useful site!  You have answered so many of my questions in one web visit.  Thanks for putting this site together for the J24 community!  I have a question about photo 126 when you have time to read it.  Thanks again.

Mars - I fixed the hatches the best I could, fashioned new slide pieces on each hatch and did new slide rails with aluminum.  I think the Waterlines $2.5k kit is for conversion to the new-style sea hood companionway.   - Rich

We are working on a J/24 upgrade. What did you do about the companionway hatch. Waterlines wants $2500 for a new hatch kit.

Great Job. I'm helping my son restore hull # 825 (year 1978). Lots of work that creats pains where you didn't know you could get them.

Question: What did you use to replace the companion way hatch slides (the 1 inch batten type material that the hatch rides on)? Yours looks like it is new.

11/6 - Non-skid
I mixed the non-skid with the paint before painting. Pro: Allows the non-skid to soak-up/swell with paint and avoids having to overcoat afterwards.  Con: Inconsistencies in non-skid texture (visible in some photos).  Verdict: Good enough for me.

View "through" bulkhead into area under sink.

11/15/05 - Lower bulkhead will be replaced with 3/4" marine plywood since that's what I bought...  According to local J/24 measurer the "correct" thickness is 1/2".  This isn't specified since many J/24's have 5/8" or 3/4" bulkhead material.
