Welcome to our growing family. Starr was a long awaited gift to Sierra, the most special member of our family. Sierra has developmental delays which make expressive language very difficult and which make other ordinary tasks seem extraordinary. Notwithstanding the things she cannot do, she is extraordinarily capable of love and great care which she now heaps in copious amounts on our dogs. Starr was first envisioned as a companion and friend who would help to teach Sierra the responsibilities of pet ownership. Very early on, Sierra delighted in just the mention of his name and it wasn't long before my major task was breaking her away from their prolonged and devoted playtimes for the more mundane things in life like dinner.
Starr, with little effort of his own, became the center of our lives outside of work and school. He not only made Sierra glow, but had the same effect on me and her brother, Stephan. As he grew, we realized how appropriate was the name that we gave him. Not only did he carry himself as though he was something very special (a true alpha male), but he WAS, without a doubt, something very special -- indeed a STARR had been born.
By four months of age, the vet began with greater urgency to remind us that the time for neutering had come. A dog lover all of my life, and always having had male pets, I knew the importance to the individual health and to the greater community of altering pets, sooner rather than later. This time, however, it felt like the wrong thing to do. I began more indepth research into the breed and consulted with a couple of breeders, who agreed that Starr might be a good start to a breeding program.
I explained breeding to Sierra and she brightened immediately when she realized that we could actually have newborn puppies and that she would learn to care for them, along with other dogs that we might acquire. What a wonderful, joy-filled, love-filled vocation to teach Sierra. How wonderful to be able work together to better the breed of the magnificent Rat Terrier. Our family is growing!! We have beautiful Skye, who joined us from Southern Sands Kennels (bred with love by Lisa Sands)as an 8 week-old in early-Summer 2004.
We welcomed two new family members over the Oct 8th, 2004 weekend. Solana, who we call LANI, is a big, strong, muscular and quite striking apricot rat terrier of Decker breeding. She has an impressive pedigree and was the first to produce a litter for us. Seren joined us as 3.5 month-old and became the baby in the family. His potential to be handsome and regal sire, makes me want to peer into the future at what this little guy will become. He is a rich and scrumptious chocolate and tan guy with elegant Irish ticking. Seren rounded us out with his genetics to potentially produce a rainbow of color and lovely conformation.
Our plan is to remain small and focus on quality over quantity. I want Sierra to be able to savor the joys of watching the miracle of life unfold. She will be encouraged to spoil and touch and stimulate and love every puppy that our pets produce.
Our first litter born December 22, 2004 was a joy for the entire family, but especially so for Sierra. Lani and Starr's 8 bouncing babies were our initiation into breeding and proved a labor of love. Each puppy placement brought with it new "family" members for us at Sierra's Heaven.
Our PLAN FOR OUR PUPPIES is to produce healthy, strong, vigorous, adventurous and intelligent individuals with a CAN DO ATTITUDE. All will be provided with many opportunities for new experiences and for SUCCESS. They will know PRAISE and the joy that comes with being a FAITHFUL and LOYAL family member.
Sabbath remained with us from that first litter and is truly our joy! We added Sunstorm to our family in July 2005, from the breeding program of our dear friend Kim Seegmiller, of Glencove, Kansas! Sunna and Spirit joined up on the same day ... Good Friday 2006. Sunna came from Pennsylvania from our good friends Carol and Bucky at Fern Hills Rat Terriers. Spirit came from way out west in Oregon from our friends at Desert High Rat Terriers, Debbie, Gary and Mason. The baby in the family right now is Psyclone who hails from Alabama and Rat Pack Kennels and Shelly Heist. I would say that we have a FULL HOUSE!! We need more room and I am trusting that God will show us a way to our dream home soon. Lots of love and lots of prayer will get us there.
Starr, Skye, Solana, Seren, Sabbath, Sunstorm, Spirit, Sunna and Psyclone are family members. All are quite spoiled and quite loved! Sierra and I have recently introduced several of our dogs to the SHOW world and will keep you abreast of their progress.
I hope that you will continue to drop by the site to see how we are progressing. I will keep the camera busy, so that you always know what is going on in Sierra’s Heaven.
Best!!

Dominion & Dynasty Litter: Old Testament (November 7, 2009)We welcome this new litter with a look to the past and the writing of the prophets that became the Old Testament. From creation and the fall in Genesis, through Revelation and the promise of a wondrous coexistence between God and man in a new Eden, there is a conceptual unity among disparate and seemingly unconnected stories. The books of the Old Testament are inextricably bound by an inherent cohesiveness and singular theology.
I have read excerpts and reviews on a book that seems to cover this topic in easily digested pieces. We intend to read it and if you have an interest these are the details: Dempster, Stephen A. Dominion and Dynasty: A Theology of the Hebrew Bible. New Studies in Biblical Theology, 15. Leicester: Apollos; Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 2003. ISBN 0-8308-2615-7. pb $22.00. 267 pp. |

PROMISED LAND Litter:SOLANA/SEREN PUPS (March 3, 2007)DUE DATE: MAY 30, 2007 BORN: MAY 31, 2007 Approximately 36% DECKER BLOODLINE
We have anticipated another Lani litter for quite some time now. Her first, the MAGI LITTER, with Starr is now 2 1/2 years old and they are big, healthy, happy adults that are a part of wonderful families who spoil and love them very much.
We are now preparing for the arrival of her second litter with UKC CH BLUEGK'S SPLENDOR OF SEREN @ SH. This pairing is an exciting one for us. Lani is approximately 78% Decker line out of Sycamore Flats Tuffy and Sycamore Flats Jackie. She is a heavily boned and muscled specimen that still maintains a feminine look that we like. She is 17.5 inches at the withers and a lean 26.5 pounds. She is a sweet, attentive and loyal girl, but is not lacking at all in prey drive and natural athleticism (and rattie goofiness). SEREN is one of my favorite boys, as he is a fun guy in the SHOW RING (just one more win to be a Grand Champion), is a calm and even tempered, loving boy, but who is very protective of his people and pack (has a very focused, serious side). Of all of the dogs at Sierra's Heaven, Seren is the FASTEST and most AGILE. He is also the most welcomed to sleep in his "Mommy's" bed.
We will be expecting large puppies (not likely to finish under 16 inches or 24 pounds), BLACK TRI and possiby APRICOTS in the PIEBALD pattern, with a chance of REDS or TAN SABLES in the mix as well. These pups will carry apricot and chocolate (and a possible rainbow from Seren's genetics) and we are anitcipating nice bone, structure and offspring that we believe will have show potential and performance potential, yet will be willing and able to give squirrels and other vermin a run for their money (and keep new families' laps and beds warm). We may get the bonus of IRISH TICKING like daddy's, CALICO from mommy's side of the family and we expect ERECT ear carriage, but no guarantees there for sure.
All puppies will be on hold for at least 8 weeks, after we have made our picks. Pups will be available to travel to their new homes after they reach 12 weeks and have had ample time to learn from their mom, littermates, and pack. Sierra's main job is to assure that each is well socialized to children, so that they are ready for anything at the time of placement. Sierra is VERY GOOD with the pups and is essentially given Carte Blanche to interact and care for them at will from the time of their births. This will be Sierra's THIRD litter (more about Sierra on the home page).
We will assist prospective new puppy owners in making appropriate selections based on puppy abilities and temperaments. All prospective new owners will be screened for appropriateness by Puppy Application, which is available on request. All puppies placed in pet homes will be spayed/neutered prior to placement.
By the time of placement, all puppies will be crate trained, microchipped, have had at least 2 sets of vaccines, multiple dewormings, will be litter trained and will be well on their way to being housebroken. The babies will also have had some early experience with water play, swimming and conformation show training. In addition, the pups will also have had at least a couple of sessions with a frisbee/agility trainer friend, who will help to assess their early readiness and potential for performance success.
All of our offspring are born and raised indoors as family members and we expect that in their new homes, they will continue to have the kind of care and inclusion that they have come to expect during their time with us. We at Sierra's Heaven, spend an inordinate amount of time assuring the perfect placement for each of our puppies. Prospective Puppy Families will be required to sign a contract and to be aware of their responsibilities as owners/buyers and of our lifetime responsibilities as breeders/sellers. It is not possible for you to ask us too many questions at any point in the process. As owners of Sierra's Heaven pups, you will always be considered family. Current owners will be happy to share their experiences and I will be happy to put you in contact with them. Hundreds of photos of past puppies are available in litter albums.
********************************
The story of Abraham begins when God tells him to leave his homeland, promising Abraham and his descendants a new home in the land of Canaan. (Gen. 12). This is the land now known as Israel, named after Abraham's grandson, whose descendants are the Jewish people. The land is often referred to as THE PROMISED LAND because of God's repeated promise (Gen. 12:7, 13:15, 15:18, 17:8) to give the land to the descendants of Abraham. The land is described repeatedly in the Torah as a good land and "a land flowing with milk and honey" (e.g., Ex. 3:8).
The Land of Israel is a special place. And because it's a special place, a spiritually sensitive place, a place of tremendous potential, it's also a place where one has to behave in a special manner. God's people will only live and prosper in their homeland if they maintain their relationship with God and carry on the mission of Abraham:
"It will be that if you hearken to My commandments that I command you today...then I shall provide rain for your land in its proper time...that you may gather your grain, your wine and your oil...and you will eat and be satisfied. Beware for yourselves, lest your heart be seduced and you go astray...the ground will not yield its produce and you will be swiftly banished from the goodly land that God gives you." (Deut. 11: 13-17)
Abraham and his wife, Sarah, were far into their late years and had not had a child together, as Sarah was barren. After Abraham had a child, Ishmael, with Sarah's maid Hagar (an Egyptian), it was soon clear that Ishmael would not carry out the covenant God made with Abraham. God tells Abraham, who is then 99, that Sarah, who is 90, is going to become pregnant. And this is how Isaac is born and the mission begins. [A rivalry will exist between Sarah and Hagar and their children, Isaac and Ishmael. Because of this rivalry Hagar and Ishmael will be sent away. This rivalry carries on for generations and is viewed as the metaphysical root of the modern rivalry between the descendants of Isaac (the Jews) and Ishmael (the Arabs)(3)] Before Sarah conceives God tells Abraham:
"Your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him as an eternal covenant to his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael ... I have blessed him and I will make him fruitful and will increase him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve princes and I will make him into a great nation. But I will establish My covenant with Isaac who Sarah will bear to you at this time next year." (Genesis 17:19-21)

UKC GrCH. SEGMLRS SUNSTORM'S AURORA @ SH (July 15, 2005)Call Name: SUNSTORM (Decker Lines 74.215%)
ORTHOPEDIC FOUNDATION FOR ANIMALS CERTIFICATIONS: PATELLAS: NORMAL CARDIAC: NORMAL HIPS: FAIR
From Mythology, AURORA is the Godess of the Dawn. From the astronomical sciences, an AURORA is a luminous atmospheric phenomenon appearing as streamers or bands of light sometimes visible in the night sky. They can be quite BREATHTAKING shimmering displays of colorful light known as the northern (or southern) lights. Bright Auroras do not require special telescopes, but instead are seen from the surface of our planet in the high northern and southern latitudes. They are caused by pulses of charged particles, mostly electrons, from the sun during SUNSTORMS, that overload the Earth's lower radiation belt and are discharged into the atmosphere, colliding with air molecules in the atmosphere.
SEGMLRS SUNSTORM'S AURORA @ SH, is the newest recruit to Sierra's Heaven and we are just delighted that she is here. Sunstorm, BREATHTAKING in her own right, was bred by our friend Kim Seegmiller, in Glencove, Kansas, at Seegmillers Decker Giant Rat Terriers. I had followed "Becca's" growth since the litter was born in May and always admired her unusal color and markings and natural beauty. She had the dreaded "reserved" label next to her pictures from the very first time I saw her. As fate or destiny had it, Becca became available during the period of time when I had been in close communication with Kimmy about the waiting lists that would be best for Sierra's Heaven to join. The rest is history and I am sure that Becca, now Sunstorm's Aurora, is a blessing and a gift to Sierra's Heaven from God! Thank YOU too, Kimmy!
SUNSTORM is RED SABLE/WHITE, Blanketback with erect ears. She is approximately 75% DECKER BLOODLINE. Her Dam was Sycamore Flats Becky 48.43% Decker (who died of a uterine infection while raising this litter), WHITE/APRICOT out of Sycamore Flats Penelope and Sycamore Flats Brutus. Her sire is Browns Best Chance, 100% DECKER, Classic BLACK TRI/BLANKETBACK, out of Simons Lucy and Browns Grit.
Sunstorm blasted onto the show circuit at age 6 1/4 months and at the ripe old age of 7 months 3 days, she earned her UKC Champion status DECEMBER 10, 2005. We are very proud of this girl and are looking forward to big things from her!!
Sunstorm earned her Grand Champion title in Hollywood, Florida on Sunday, April 13, 2008. It had been a long while since we were in the ring, but she stepped out as if she remembered just what was expected. She even put herself up on the table for examination ... silly girl! I love having her in the ring with me, so we will probably continue to show occasionally ... at least as long as it seems to be fun for her, too!! CONGRATS!!
Born: MAY 7, 2005

UKC Gr CH. BlueGKs Splendor of Seren @SH (October 10, 2004) ORTHOPEDIC FOUNDATION FOR ANIMALS CERTIFICATIONS: PATELLAS: NORMAL CARDIAC: NORMAL HIPS: EXCELLENT
Seren (Gaelic for Star) is a gorgeous Chocolate, Tan and White Rat Terrier. His rich chocolate color and exotic Irish ticking serves up whopping portion of eye candy. Seren’s temperament is as sweet and playful as any could hope for. His conformation is so seemingly perfect that I can hardly wait for him to grow into his adult body. Seren was bred at Blue Granite Kennels in Blackstock, SC, by Kathie Treacy, who I am sure is very proud of this little guy! His dam is Salty Dog's Calypso Cove (a 20 pound breathtaking Black Tri, that carries color genetics for chocolate and blue). His sire is RPK’s Hang Fire (“Mick”) of Southern Sands Kennels in Glenville, GA (a stunning 24 pound High Red Chocolate Sable/White male standing 16 1/2 inches and carries genetics for chocolate, red, blue and Pearl. He was born 12-5-02.). Seren will likely finish in the 17 inch, 22-24 pound range. This little jewel of ours carries color genetics for blue, blue fawn, tan blue sable, tan black sable, and possibly apricot, along with, of course, red, chocolate and chocolate sable. Seren is registered UKC and has earned his UKC conformation championship, as of NOVEMBER 20, 2005. Seren earned his Grand Champion status in Hollywood, Florida on MAY 24, 2009. Born 06/19/04.

Diamond Valley's Solana @ SH "Lani" (March 1, 2007)Lani had her first wonderful litter on December 22, 2004, which we named our GIFTS OF THE MAGI litter. We ended up with 6 boys and 2 girls. Lani was a superb mother ... nuturing, patient and scrupulously clean. She was always very trusting and happy to share the litter with us. Lani made it a very pleasant first for us at Sierra's Heaven.
Solana is now in excellent health! She has filled out nicely since weaning the pups and is currently a robust, but lean and muscular 25 1/2 pounds. Her nutritional status is excellent, she takes daily supplements along with a quality premium diet. She is OFA Certified for Patellas; vet certified for Cardiac (awaiting official OFA certification). She is OFA Certified GOOD for her Hips and elbows are normal. With continued good health and no medical concerns, we will plan her next breeding early 2007 to BlueGK's SPLENDOR OF SEREN @ SH (again, pending all age appropriate health certifications). If Lani comes into season later than February or March 2007, that breeding will be postponed to Fall/Winter 2007. We feel that the extreme heat, humidity and stormy weather conditions of a South Florida summer (not to speak of mosquitos) is an unfriendly time for raising newborn puppies.
The Lani/Seren offspring should be exhibit the epitome of ATHLETICISM. Both parents are very lean HARD BODIES with seeming bionic springs in their legs. They are fast and agile and enjoy being chased, as there are hardly any others in our pack of 10 who can keep the lead for long in a full out sprint. Temperament-wise, these puppies should be hard to match. Both Lani and Seren are obedient, attentive and loving. Lani is the textbook mother ... kind, loving and more patient than she should be at times. Seren is extremely loyal and will willingly give up a game of chase to sit by my feet as sentry, if he feels there is any reason I might need protection. Seren is not an alpha, but is definitely second in command in our pack and will protect any member, including his beloved Sierra, from "strangers" until I give the "it's okay" command. In a perfect world, Seren would be in contention for the PERFECT DOG. Seren is also fun and natural in the Show Ring and is nearing Grand Champion status.
The Lani/Seren puppies will be large. My guess is that none will be under 17 inches at the whithers or 24 pounds at maturity. To date, all of my puppies have outgrown their parents, so these predictions are not more than my best guess. Lani does not carry chocolate and Seren may carry apricot, so these puppies will be Black Tri's and possible Apricots with piebald pattern and possible calico and erect ears (best guess as well). |

Anderson's STARR (September 25, 2004)| Starr is a Black Tri Calico boy with Button Ears. After breeding Starr the first time to Solana, we found that he carries APRICOT and TAN. That litter produced 4 APRICOTS, 1 TAN and 5 BLACK TRIs. He is 15 1/2 inches and 20 1/2 pounds. Extremely athletic! Runs like a greyhound ... actually a blur when he gets going. He cuts corners so tightly that blades of grass fly up behind him. His dam is Nit Noy of Morning Rat Kennel. His sire is Boonton of Spring High Kennel. Registered UKC, UKCI, NRTR. Born 03/15/03. |

SIERRA'S HEAVEN SABBATH REIGNS (December 23, 2004)Sabbath, the "day of rest and worship."
ORTHOPEDIC FOUNDATION FOR ANIMALS:
HIPS: GOOD CARDIAC: NORMAL PATELLAS: NORMAL
SABBATH (Decker Lines 35.935%) was our prize from Sierra's Heaven's very first litter of SOLANA & STARR, born December 22, 2004. He was the 1st live born puppy and the largest from birth and has continued to maintain that status. This little guy chose us at a very young age. He showed a preference for his humans' attention over an opportunity to run outside with his litter mates or with the whole pack. He made it quite clear that he was going to STAY right here, and, indeed, stay he did!
SABBATH has the calmest temperament that one could imagine and is loving, loyal and patient. Sounds more like the description of a Lab than a Terrier, but we call it like we see it. Actually, though, SABBATH has always reminded me of a calm, proud, and regal LION. I would sometimes jokingly call him Mufasa, when he would strike an especially self-assured and majestic pose.
Strangers have described Sabbath's look as ELEGANT, and I think we here at Sierra's Heaven would agree with that. He is a tall, dark and handsome BLACK-TRI CALICO with a lovely BLANKETBACK PATTERN and his ears are tipped. At last weigh-in, he tipped the scales at 33 pounds (13 1/4 months) and he hasn't started to fill out just yet. We expect that he will easily surpass 35 pounds at maturity and may approach 38 pounds. I don't know that there are thirty-eight pounders in his pedigree, but a combination of NATURE and NUTURE may take him there!! We will certainly do our best to maximize the NURTURE part of the puzzle (his father, Starr, is 20.5 pounds and his mother, Solana, is 25.5 pounds). Sabbath carries genetics for APRICOT.
In our eyes, Sabbath's finest features include his structure and fine boning. He has beautiful teeth and a perfect scissor bite (he is not fond of having them brushed, but is getting used to the idea). His coat has a luxurious shine without added oils or conditioners. He is strong, active and athletic and the finest of swimmers among our pack. In fact, there is never a day when he does not invite himself into the pool up to 3 to 5 times per day.
Sabbath is a Decker Outcross with approximately 36% Decker bloodline. His crowning feature, we feel, is his outstanding temperament. He recently began his debut into the world of Show Dogs and brought home several ribbons his first time out (will keep you posted on his progress). Decker traits are very strong in Sabbath and his size his just at the upper end of the breed standard ... an advantage to us in terms of our breeding goals, but perhaps not so advantageous in the show ring. Fun and socialization are just as important to us on show day, as bringing home the ribbons. Sabbath has so far earned one Major toward his UKC Championship. Will keep you posted!!
Sabbath has had excellent health to date. Pending his continued good health and orthopedic certfications as he matures, we look forward to having Sabbath as a treasured stud here at Sierra's Heaven. For now, he is just enjoying being our treasured baby boy!

Si's Hvn Sire of the Baptizer "Zachy" (December 23, 2004)ORTHOPEDIC FOUNDATION FOR ANIMALS: HIPS: GOOD CARDIAC: NORMAL PATELLAS: NORMAL
The Angel Gabriel appeared to ZACHARIAS and said, "Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shall call his name John." Zachy was the first little Apricot surprise to make his appearance in our very first litter between Lani and Starr. Such a welcomed sight he was and is. Zach was a little snuggler. He would find his way into a little warm spot in your hands and then get very still and peaceful. This boy knows how to make friends! |
