Midlands Cluster A Christ the King, Good Shepherd, Resurrection and St. Paul's Lutheran Churches, Columbia There were very touching comments from volunteers about how it felt to go work at Victory House, one of the group homes sponsored by LFS of SC. Residents were excited over something as simple as a new toothbrush and curtains that were made to hang over their closets in place of closet doors. We have received a thank-you poster back from the boys at Victory House. It is so special to watch the reactions once a wheel chair ramp is completed and to see just how thankful the people are. One lady had fried chicken and biscuits for the volunteers. We had sewing projects where lap robes and small pillows were made for Veterans at the Dorn VA Medical Center. They were greatly needed and were so appreciated that this may become an on going project.Lutheran Hospice Landscaping Team beautified the outside of the Blanding St office by: cutting the grass, edging, cutting back the shrubs, pulling out weeds and debris from the bushes, and laying pine straw all around the grounds. To say they made a big difference would be an understatement! The building looks wonderful! The crew that picked up trash out of the bushes found a sock filled with coins that added up to $206.82; this money will be given to Lutheran Hospice in honor of Operation Inasmuch. Other volunteers at the Free Medical Clinic, worked to clean up the grounds, and some worked inside with the director in cleaning up old paperwork and files. We sent our God’s Young Followers to deliver baked goods to Forest Acres Police Department and 6 of our local fire departments. The children had a great time and the firemen were very excited over all the homemade goodies that they received. Youth went to The Rice Home to play WII bowling with some of the residents and to visit with them. One group had a free car wash at First Community Bank on Forest Drive. They were able to wash and clean several cars before the rain took over. A team of Volunteers collected, sorted and packaged donated items for three different organizations. Over the last month we placed collection boxes in the 4 churches in our cluster with a list of needed items. The response was wonderful.A group of about 20 Youth and Adult volunteers went to Harvest Hope to help them with a large project. We sent a group out to do Litter Pick up along Gills Creek. Two groups worked with United Cerebral Palsy, one group did yard work to give a great look to the front yard of a home. The team leader did some excellent pre-operation inasmuch work and got the following businesses to donate over $200.00 in flowers, shrubs and azaleas – Woodley’s Garden Center, Morgan’s Nursery and Piggly Wiggly #77. The other group working with United Cerebral Palsy did a wonderful job painting several rooms in one of their homes.

Christ, Columbia Christ Lutheran, Columbia At Christ Lutheran we sorted and packed over 5,800 cards for a wide variety of occasions in 28 boxes to send a Chaplain in Iraq for distribution among the SC troops that were deployed in March. The troops want to send cards home and they just aren't readily available. To fill the spaces and ensure full packages we included boxes of individual drink mix (to add to their water), which is especially popular over there. Our second project was to assemble 43 bags decorated by children with 20 cards each for the use by the residents of Agape Retirement Center, where one of our members resides. We are looking forward to another statewide service day next year.

Manantial de Vida, Columbia Manantial de Vida (Spring of Life) Lutheran, Columbia We are blessed that members of St. Paul's, Aiken and Redeemer, Columbia chose to help our mission church with repairs, landscaping, painting, and organizing. They set up scaffolding and painted the inside of the church. Our Bishop Herman can be seen at the top of a 40-foot ladder painting the vault above the sanctuary! Our church got a facelift as volunteers cleaned carpets, made plumbing and electrical repairs, and planted the first flowers in our future meditation garden. The children cleaned our bus and helped with landscaping. Volunteers helped to sort donated food and clothing and organize storage. The women in our congregation made a delicious authentic Mexican meal. It was truly a blessing to bring our Spanish- and English-speaking brothers and sisters together to do God’s work.

Laurens-Spartanburg Chapter of Thrivent (May 2, 2009)Laurens-Spartanburg Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans These photos were taken at Musgrove Mill State Park. This is the fourth year that the Laurens-Spartanburg Chapter of Thrivent Financial has sponsored a Join Hands Day project at Musgrove Mill. This year, there was trail maintenance, harvesting rocks, and erosion control that took place. The work was done by Girl Scout troops from Union, Clinton, and Duncan, SC. The rock harvesting was hard work. They dug out rocks by the river bank and moved them to another place where there had been soil erosion. Some of the rocks were huge, especially this one they were determined to bring out. I think the Park Ranger inspired them when he stated he didn't expect them to finish that day. Well, guess what?? At the end of the project, the workers were given a hot dog lunch with all the fixin's. These girls will be presented with the special Join Hands Day Girl Scout patch. The Join Hands Day organization made it available this year. This was definitely a case of young and "mature" hands working together to make a difference in their community. And they all had a great time doing it. Respectfully submitted, Teresa Foster Youth Director Laurens-Spartanburg Chapter Thrivent Financial

St. Matthias, Easley St. Matthias Lutheran, Easley, SC More than 70 volunteers from St. Matthias Lutheran Church took part in Operation Inasmuch. Project coordinator, Mike Faulkner, summed up the days effort by saying, “It is amazing how a simple act of kindness serving someone in need is magnified many times over when a concentrated volunteer effort produces results.” Some of the projects included: -Holding a baby shower that provided gifts for crisis pregnancies at “Hope Woman’s Center.” -Building a new deck and ramp for a homebound resident who was identified with the help of the local “Meals on Wheels” group. -Bagging and loading donated clothing for “Home with a Heart”, a Christian based inpatient rehabilitation facility for men with addictions, located in Liberty. -Delivering baked goods to two local fire stations and the Easley Police station to say thanks for all they do for our community. -A youth group set up shop at an Ingles store to ask for donations of nonperishable food, from shoppers entering the store. Shoppers responded big time which resulted in collecting more than a full-size pickup truck full of items that were given to Piedmont Emergency Relief Center (PERC), located in Piedmont. |

Sandy Run, Swansea Sandy Run Lutheran Church, Swansea, SC When we followed the instructions for compiling the numbers from the individual projects, I got a total participation of 94 people in 11 projects. With an average attendance of 45 (verified by the church council treasurer), that is 209% participation. In all actuality, several people were counted multiple times as they participated in multiple projects. 62 individuals participated in at least one of our 11 projects, for a participation rate of 138%. Four people who had committed to projects had to drop out at the last minute due to health issues, or we would have had close to 150%. We are SO proud of our little church! The Spirit breathed the living breath of Operation InAsMuch into our congregation, and our members could not help but respond! We partnered with the Sandy Run Fire Department, the Sandy Run Community Club, Sandy Run School, Calhoun Convalescent Home, and even the South Carolina Employment Security Commission to bring services to 394 members of our community. Congregation members from <1-year-old to 94-years-old served community members from <1-year-old to 90 years old. One of our young members who is away at college returned to Sandy Run for the weekend to participate; one of our member’s granddaughter who has not been to church in over 2 years came to participate; and one couple who was formerly very active in the congregation, but has not attended for several years, not only participated, but served on the planning team and has started to attend worship services again. We have been blessed! |

St Michael's Columbia St. Michael's Lutheran, Columbia The day began with worship led by Pastor Wessinger; then the teams were off to their designated places to begin their mission services. It was a joy to work together with our cluster congregations, Christus Victor and Bethlehem Lutheran, to share love and concern for others thereby making a difference in our community. St. Michael’s 60+ volunteers served by repairing and painting a Homework’s home site, helping pack over 2000 food boxes at Harvest Hope Food Bank, singing at local nursing homes, walking and caring for animals at the FIDO Rescue site, making prayers cloths, compiling 30 birthday bags for Sharing God’s Love, baking and distributing cookies to local E-R’s, welcome centers, nursing homes, sheriff and fire departments. We further appreciate the generosity of many supporters providing financial contributions, dozens and dozens of fresh baked cookies, blankets and pet supplies. A very special thank you is expressed to our project leaders—Bill Adams, Homework’s ; Diana Riley, Cookie Baking & Distribution; Bunny Wessinger, Harvest Hope Food Bank; and Adam Kelly for serving as photographer. Griet Atkins, Christus Victor; Joanne Kightlinger, Bethlehem; Bunny Wessinger, St. Michael’s served as the coordinators for our respective congregations. Thank you to Thrivent Financial for providing matching funds to further support this mission. As our ELCA theme promotes….we were truly using our hands to complete God’s work. |
