Bill
1. Bill
UPDATE: Adoption pending! Bill has had his surgery and is back home recovering. He's in some pain, and is very unhappy about the "lamp shade" the doctors say he has to wear. The final cost of the surgery (1 pins & a plate, and a neuter) was $1900 - but our wonderful vets only charged us $800!! Still, we'll need your help to pay this bill and any after care visits Bill needs to recover.

Bill was rescued from the high-kill shelter in Miami, FL. Bill's owners dumped him at the shelter after he was hit by a car. He has a broken leg (femur bone) and a broken pelvis, and will be undergoing orthopedic surgery on May 25th. The estimated cost of Bill's surgery is $1,500-2,000.

Gracie Mae
2. Gracie Mae
Adopted!

Gracie has had a very rough start in life. She is a very sweet, affectionate 8 - 12 month old pup, who we believe was struck by a car and left for dead on a SC highway. She was finally picked up by a good samaritan and taken to York Shelter in NC. She had lost so much weight she could barely stand. We believe Gracie was suffering from symptoms of starvation, as the shelter thought she may have had neurological damage because she was not able to walk or eat. She had a broken left rear leg and needed help both eating and drinking. A wonderful volunteer contacted us about her, and Ratbone stepped in and rescued her, and now she is getting a new lease on life in her foster home in NC with a nicely repaired leg. Unfortunately, Gracie's vet bills are high. Can you help Gracie? Any amount would be greatly appreciated!! Please donate to help Gracie today!

Lexi
5. Lexi  (11/26/09)
Lexi is just a youngster - still under a year old. She has a genetic condition called LCP; this causes the "head" of the femur bone (at the top of the hind leg, where it joins the hip socket) to stop growing and die (the flow of blood that usually nourishes the bone stops). The only treatment for this condition is the removal of the top half of the bone. Fortunately, dogs who have this surgery are able to walk and run normally after several months of healing and rehabilitation.
The cost of Lexi's evaluation, x-rays, surgery and after-care is $1,000. Please help us with this expense if you can.

RockytheChamp
6. RockytheChamp  (4/10/09)
This is what Rocky's fostermom had to say this morning:

"After 2 long hours at the vet last night, and what seemed like hundreds of tests we finally got an answer. Rocky is a walking infection. He has 2 double ear infections, 2 shattered ear drums, an internal infection.... a skin infection... and eye infection... broken rib... heart murmor.... and an infection in his gums. Needless to say, he was severly neglegled. The Vet said his ear and skin infection have definitly been in his body for over 2 years, as his ears tried to heal around the infection. She was suprised that he was still alive. When I picked him up on Saturday, Animal Control said they had been giving him Amoxicillin for the ear infection as well as ear drops, and I continued doing that until we saw the vet. The vet said the infection was so bad she was sure the amoxicillin wouldn't kill the bacteria, as the infection under the microscope has 'rods' in it, and typically that medication would never kill an infection with rods.

The vet wanted to keep him for 2 or 3 days, but that would ave cost $160/day. So luckily, she gave me an IV and some antibiotic/steriod shots to take home and give him myself. Plus a few different kinds of medicine: two for the ears, one for the eye, and a pill for his body. Also, she 'threw in' some medicated shampoo for his skin, some food to help him put on weight fast, a pill to calm his stomach... and a partridge in a pear tree.

We kept giving him IV doses though the night, and this morning his temperature finally broke! It was over 105 at the vet's office, and this morning it was 101.2 - which is almost perfect. He has been spoiled rotten since he got home. Last night I boiled some chicken and brown rice, and made chicken broth with some doggie vitamins mixed in - which he loved. Plus he got to come to work with me today, since I want to keep an eye on his water consumption and his temperature. He
seems to be doing better! I got a tail wag this morning, and he's responding to sign language very well. His ears are so badly damaged that even after they heal he will still be deaf.

The bill was pretty steep: $425. But that included all of the tests, all of the medicine, the IV, and the steriod shots. They gave me a ton of stuff for free, and the vet said if anything 'goes bad' in the next week, that visit is 'on the house'."

We feel that Rocky is a real Champion, and his (and his fostermom's) story is a tribute to what rescue is all about. Plus - he has such a cute little face! We think that with the "9 million kinds of antibiotics" he's taking, he should shine up like a new penny!

Busker
7. Busker  (09/09/09)
Busker was hit by a car, and his pelvis was broken. Surgery to plate his pelvis cost $1,250 (after discount). Busker will need x-rays at 4 and 8 weeks post-op, which will cost $150-300 each time. This sweet boy was so worth the money it took to save him!!

MayaPiddlepot
8. MayaPiddlepot  (01/24/09)
UPDATE: Maya is back home with her foster family, playing and eating like she was never sick! He bloodwork is looking good, and she is beginning to "aquat" to pee. She will see the surgeon again on 2/16/09 for more bloodwork and an ultrasound - to make sure her kidneys are fully recovered. The final bill for her surgery & treatment was $2,500 - though our wonderful surgeon knocked another $4,300 off the real total!!

Update: Poor little Maya has had a hard week. Two days after her surgery she began to feel bad, and an ultrasound showed that her kidneys were funtioning at only a fraction of their normal rate. This could have been the end for Maya, but her doctors put her on IV fluids until her kidneys began to work as they should. She remains in the hospital, but is feeling much better today (2/1/09). Tomorrow she will have bloodwork done to make sure that she is well enough to go home.

Update: Maya had her surgery on Tuesday, January 27th. She's having to stay the week in the hospital, so the doctors can check her blood levels every day and keep her catheter in (which prevents strain on the incision in her bladder). We don't have a final cost yet, but should know when she gets to come home on Friday (1/30).

Maya Piddlepot has a birth defect that causes her to leak urine constantly; her ureters (the two tubes going from her kidneys to her bladder) are both attached to the wrong place (her vagina). Surgery can be performed to correct this condition, but it is very expensive.

Maya has had a very exciting life for a 15 week old puppy! She was born in Michigan, and was with a rescue there until just recently. But they didn't have a surgeon  or the funds to have her birth defect corrected. So they contacted Ratbone, and we agreed to take Maya. Because the distance was so great, the MI rescue contacted ARF (Animal Rescue Flights.org) - an organization of pilots and other folks who love to fly and love to help rescue animals - to help get Maya to Florida.

January 23, 2009 was the day for Maya's Big Adventure. Scott P. flew from Chicago (IL) to Grand Rapids (MI) to pick her up.... then back to Chicago to catch a flight to Jacksonville (FL). Maya and Scott arrived in Jax at 4:30 pm, and were met by her new fostermom. Maya went to her new temporary home, and Scott got back on a plane to spend some down-time with friends in another state. Thank you, Scott!

Maya will see her surgeon on Monday (1/26/09) for tests and to schedule surgery. We expect the total cost will be between $1,500 and $2,500. Please consider helping us with little Maya's surgery!

WEEZIE (Florida)
9. WEEZIE (Florida)  (March 2007)
Little Weezie Ratbone and her siblings were being  fostered in New York state until it was discovered that Weezie had a birth defect that needed a specialist's care. After flying to Florida, Weezie was examined by our surgeon and we found that she had a detached ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder). One ureter is connected to the bladder, but the other was too long, and attached to the vagina. This caused Weezie to dribble urine all the time. Click her picture for more info.

AUSTIN (Oregon)
10. AUSTIN (Oregon)  (December 2007)
Austin required major invasive surgery to remove a foreign body wedged between the small intestine and the large intestine, which was punctured in several places. Although he was given only a 20% chance of surviving the surgery and raging sepsis, he has pulled through. Click his picture for more info.

MOXIE (Washington)
11. MOXIE (Washington)  (January 2008)
Moxie was hit by a car left on the side of the road for 24 hrs, then dropped off at a Texas shelter, unable to walk and snapping in pain. At the shelter she was found to be heartworm positive so naturally was deemed completely unadoptable and no other rescues would take her, so she was due to be euthanized. But the shelter didn't count on Ratbone Rescues! Click Moxie's picture for more information.

Monty-Jack has gone home! (California)
12. Monty-Jack has gone home! (California)  (08/06/08)
Update! Monty (Jack) was reunited with his family. They had been looking for him since he went missing but the shelter told them he had been euthanized. Luckily, they didn't give up and were finally able to track him down with Ratbone Rescues. We were able to have a happy reunion with them in Lodi at Monty-Jack's fostermom's house. They were so excited and thankful to Ratbone for rescuing their dog that would have otherwise been put to sleep. What a happy tail and thanks to all of those who donated to the raffle. His family is going to have the eye surgery done once Monty-Jack settles back in to his "forever home". You can also check out the story in the local newspaper http://www.lodinews.com/articles/2008/08/07/news/2_dog_080807.txt
On June 28, 2008 Monty Ratbone was rescued from the Monterey County shelter in Salinas, CA by Ratbone Rescues. Prior to coming to the shelter, he was mauled by wild animals. He sustained bite wounds to his neck and face. The severe trauma of the attack combined with a disorder where the ligaments that hold the lens onto the eye are weakened caused his lens to detach and move forward in front of his eye.
