T-Rex

April 28, 2009

T-Rex is a 2.5 year old Miniature Rat Terrier, who weighs around 13 lbs and stands about 11.5 inches at the shoulders.
Rex came to North East Companion Animal Refuge (AKA Dog's Deserve Better) about a month ago from a very chaotic, stressful home situation. Rex is a very smart, silly boy who is very playful and eager to please. He gets along with other dogs but sometimes tries to be bossy - though he will generally defer if there is a conflict. He would be best in a home with a female canine companion or as an only dog, but can get along very well in groups of dogs. He also gets along well with dog friendly cats. Unfortunately we would not feel comfortable placing him in a home with children. In Rex's previous home he was very misunderstood. His exercise needs were not being met and there were no boundaries or rules in place. He became very fearful of one individual in the home who had "backhanded him" at one point and as a defense mechanism ended up biting this person. NECAR was called and Rex was signed over to us. We fully expected to find ourselves with an anxiety ridden little terrier with all sorts of long lasting issues, but that couldn't be further from the truth with Rex. I myself am a certified dog trainer and had decided to foster Rex to make sure he was thoroughly evaluated and rehabilitated if necessary..... I have been very pleasantly surprised and amazed at this little guy's resiliancy. I run a very structured schedule with my dogs and basically follow the "Nothing in Life is Free" principals and Rex has fit into this lifestyle like a star. Rex loves going out for our daily "pack walks", is very good on and off leash and also loves to play fetch. (He learned the fetch game rules from watching my dogs play.) I have also been working with him on basic obedience and exposing him to lots of new people and situations. I can't say enough good things about him. He is a gem and seems to have no lasting negative effects or aggression issues what so ever from his previous situation but will need to have clear structure/boundaries and adequate exercise in his new home. We think he would make a great sporting dog, for Agility, possibly Flyball, frisbee, etc........ or just an all around great companion for an active person...... Oh, and also he loves to ride.... Rex is neutered, UTD on Rabies, Distemper, has had a Lyme Vaccination & Bordatella, as well. He is microchipped, housebroken, and crate trained.
