17 Turkey-Antalya(YivliMinaret) 2006-06 001 The Yivli minaret - IIRC the cylinders forming the main tower each is supposed to represent one of the 7 philosophers of Turkey, but I might have got this wrong ;-)

| 22 Turkey-Aperlae 2006-03 002 These next four photos Frank took after our interesting treck through the wildnerness of Aperlae when we eventually came upon a hill fort with Sarcophagi litered around the hillside (about 700 BC) - an eery place it was too!
| 23 Turkey-Aperlae 2006-03 003
| 24 Turkey-Aperlae 2006-03 004 Taken in Aperlae; I would frequently see the same-style sarcophagi littered about the hillsides of the Taurus mountains as we travelled through the Anatolia countryside

 25 Turkey-Aperlae 2006-03 005 Nice one Frank!

| 27 Turkey-Aquaducts 2006-03 001
| 28 Turkey-Aquaducts 2006-03 002 One of the things that "got" me about Turkey was the amount of archeologically interesting sites about. Although some were officially open to the public, the country (or at least Anatolia) seems to have remnants of ancient times just littered all over the countryside, not managed in any official sense at all. It is almost as if there are so many of them that the government/whoever just can't administer them (other than the "big" ones) in any organised fashion.

| 55 Turkey-Cruise 2006-03 001 Way out amongst the various little islands along the coast of south west Turkey we were amused to see this graffiti! They would have had to have done this from a boat!
| 56 Turkey-Cruise 2006-03 002 Note the bottom bit of graffiti - a URL - and as I aimed the camera it dawned on me that much of this graffiti is advertising aimed at the tourists!

 57 Turkey-Cruise 2006-03 003
| 58 Turkey-Cruise 2006-03 004 A traditional Turkish Gulet - we lived on one of these for three days. I loved it, but it was extremely cramped. However, the worst bit for me was hitting my head on the boom (the bar that runs between the two sail masts) - I came home and a trip to A&E revealed I had spent the rest of the trip (and would spend the first few days back at home) with concussion!
| 59 Turkey-Cruise 2006-03 005 Sat out in the middle of nowhere on a Gulet and who should appear but the ice-cream man (no silly music though) - I am thrilled that I caught his very mediteranean gesticulation on camera!

| 106 Turkey-Termessos 2006-03 001 Termessos was an adventure and a half! It involved pretending one was a mountain goat: clambering over boulders and slippery soil up a part of the Taurus mountains. However, a really rich archological feast awaits at the top...

| 115 Turkey-Termessos 2006-03 010 These geezers, the Termessians (C300 BC) even defeated Alexander the Great (333 BC). One of the reasons they managed to stay so self-sufficient (and survive, e.g. a seige) was because they collected water in a number of deep cylindrical reservoirs such as that shown in the photo, so they could survive and grow crops and keep goats (perhaps) up there

|
 117 Turkey-Termessos 2006-03 012
| 118 Turkey-Termessos 2006-03 013 This was the crowning glory of Termessos for me - after all the trecking we come across an amphitheatre - high up in the mountains. The photo just can't do this justice - the other side of the rear of the amphitheatre is a deep ravine, and the other side of that, another mountain (as you can see)...
| 119 Turkey-Termessos 2006-03 014
| 120 Turkey-Termessos 2006-03 015 Frank and I sat and soaked up this atmosphere and we imagined how awesome it would be in moonlight (the stone would look silver), and also with geezers with flares up the mountain opposite - when we walked through all the rubble to get here, it was a definite "wow-awesome" moment... It is just a bummer that camera can't capture it - you really need to go!

| 124 Turkey-Ucagiz 2006-03 001 We stayed in Ucagiz on the second-to-last night of being in Turkey (about 200 (IIRC) clicks from Antalya in a very unspoilt coastal location. I woke up on the day we were due to return to Antalya and saw this awesome ship with the morning light just catching it in the right way!
