Amabantur at the CCA, Santa Fe
Sunday, Aug. 30th will be our last performance before we leave Santa Fe for 4 months. The show will be at the CCA at 8:15 PM. In late September we’ll be performing at a major puppet festival in Charleville-Mezieres, and later in the year at another festival in Dakar, Senegal and then in Mali.
The show at the CCA will be in a mixture of French, English, and Spanish verse –the same show we will present at the festival in France. We have received a lot of help and encouragement for this show from the Santa Fe Accueil (the French community organization). They helped make the CCA show possible as well as the translation. Don’t worry about the language – you will understand the story– it’s puppets! And it’s fun for all ages.
For those of you who came to the live taping last August, thanks! Your enthusiastic energy helped us to make it into the festival.
The story, named Amabantur, is based on the myth of Eros and Psyche, one of the first examples of a written myth in Western culture (our original source is The Golden Ass, Apuleus, 100 AD). This myth is the foundation of many of the oldest Western fairy tales. It tells of the heroine’s journey. While the hero’s journey has often been battling and conquering enemies, going to the outside world, the heroine’s journey consists of going down, surrendering, dying to the old, the inner way of transformation. The story begins with the classic line, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”. In this case it is Venus asking the question. The mirror responds that she is no longer the fairest, that Psyche is more beautiful. Thus starts the conflict, which eventually ends with an enraged Venus sending Psyche to Hell in punishment for falling in love with Eros, Venus’ son. We cast Marilyn Monroe as Psyche, and Elvis as Eros. The show follows the version in The Golden Ass very closely, but with completely modern references and humor.
Ticket prices are $10 adults, $5 teens, kids FREE.
