THE TRUE MEANING OF "PUPPY MILL"
Did you know the term “PUPPY MILL” has no LEGAL definition? A Supreme Court judge, in Missouri ruled the term to be only an OPINION. In order to create a negative image in your mind to influence that OPINION; Animal Rights activists use deception and emotional blackmail with 7-10 yr. old photos from other kennels or countries, old statistics, edited videos and make false accusations of filth, neglect and abuse. Animal Rights activists only use the derogatory term “PUPPY MILL” with the intent to encourage prejudice towards legitimate BREEDERS.

Do you know what prejudice means? Prejudice: an unfavorable opinion or unreasonable feelings, opinions formed without knowledge, thought, or reason, or an irrational attitude of a hostile nature directed against an individual, ect.

As there is no legal definition for a “PUPPY MILL”, this fabricated word is used only by Animal Rights activists to promote prejudice towards BREEDERS. This “P” word is as offensive and degrading to BREEDERS as the “N” word is to racial groups and should to be removed from our vocabulary immediately.

Do you know the difference between Animal Rights Vs Animal Welfare?

ANIMAL WELFARE, as defined by the American Veterinary Medical Association, is a human responsibility that encompasses all aspects of animal well-being, including proper housing, management, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, and humane handling.

ANIMAL RIGHTS is an ideology that animals have the same rights as humans. Animal rights (AR) activists support laws and regulations that would prohibit pet stores, breeders, kennels, rodeos, horse racing, circuses, hunting, life-saving medical research using animals, raising of livestock for food, petting zoos, marine parks, and any use of animals for industry, sport or recreation. http://realanimalwelfare.com/animal-rights-vs-animal-welfare/

Did you know there, in fact, is no longer an overpopulation of shelter dogs in the USA? In 1972 we euthanized, 26 million animals, in 2011, 3 million (75% were cats), and in 2016, 1.5 million of which 670,000 were dogs. AR activists still use the old 2011 stats. https://www.aspca.org/animal-homelessness/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics

Did you know in 2016 there were, in fact, only 1,880 USDA class A BREEDERS left, producing less than 300,000 pups for sale in the USA? AR activists claim there are over 10,000 “puppy mills” and USDA breeders produced 1 million of the 2 million annual pups for sale. The facts are not as impressive.  http://realanimalwelfare.com/usda-dog-breeder-stats/

Did you know the USDA’S Animal Welfare Act (AWA) regulations for proper animal care were, in fact, written under or by licensed veterinarians and all licensees are subject to annual, random unannounced inspections? AR activists believes the AWA is substandard, therefore, every BREEDER that has more than 5 animals is guilty of “cruelty”.

Did you know, RESCUES/SHELTERS/BREEDERS all, in fact, have to keep animals in “cages”? All animals must be confined (pen/cage/run/crate/yard/house) for the animal’s safety and to abide by state leash laws. BREEDERS have to meet AWA space requirements to acquire and keep a license. Most RESCUES/SHELTERS do not have any space requirements. AR activists claim the AWA cage size is tiny, but only quote the smallest crate size allowed if animal is turned out daily.

Did you know RESCUES/SHELTERS/BREEDERS all, in fact, have expenses that are incurred as a business such as veterinary fees, medications, food, equipment, employees, advertising, groomers, etc..? BREEDERS do not receive help with these expenses, thus, requiring a higher recovery fee. They also collect sales tax and pay state/federal taxes on those fees. RESCUES/SHELTERS usually receive grants, volunteers, discounted services, and donations to help with these expenses, thus, requiring a lower recovery fee. They do not pay state/federal taxes or collect sales tax on those fees. It is necessary for any business to recover expenses. AR activists equate BREEDER recovery fees (sale) to cruelty.

Did you know RESCUES/SHELTERS/BREEDERS all, in fact, are in the business of placing pets in forever homes by providing and selling pets to the public? BREEDERS offer an animal with a guarantee for health, temperament, and heritage for a fee (sale). RESCUES/SHELTERS offer an animal without a guarantee for health, temperament, and heritage for a fee (adoption/rehoming/donation). You “rescue” or “save “an animal when you pick it up off the side of the road or pull it from a burning building.  If you had to give one cent or any type of compensation in order to acquire that pet, you in fact purchased it. You adopt a child, you buy a dog. Think about it.

Did you know most RESCUES/SHELTERS are not required to follow any type of AWA regulations for proper care? Many “rescues” are selling animals illegally, without any type of license or a 501c3 status. Have you ever asked to see proof? 501c3 status is only for tax free regulations, not animal care. Most of their facilities are extremely substandard to any AWA requirements, as cleanliness is a suggestion and disease is rampant. Sadly, the animals are the ones that suffer needlessly as most improper care is a direct result of ignorance and not malicious intent. There has been as many, if not more, animal cruelty raids on “rescues” than breeders in 2016. https://www.aspca.org/news/breaking-aspca-assists-rescue-nearly-600-animals-neglect-unlicensed-nc-facility

Did you know RESCUES/SHELTERS/BREEDERS can, in fact, breed animals for the purpose of producing offspring for sale? BREEDERS plan most breeding’s, pay for the breeds that are chosen for health, temperament and quality. RESCUES/SHELTERS that do breed, have no investment in the random sourced animals and cannot plan breeding’s or pick animals for health, temperament or quality. AR activists believes that unregulated RESCUE/SHELTER animals should be America’s only source of pets. http://www.aspcapro.org/blog/2013/05/23/where-will-puppies-come

Did you know RESCUES/SHELTERS/BREEDERS can, in fact, BUY dogs like these and IMPORT animals from other states/countries for sale? In 2016, RESCUES imported over 574,000 dogs for sale from other countries, displacing the local population and bringing in deadly foreign diseases. BREEDERS have a set of AWA guidelines for proper transport. Many RESCUES/SHELTERS import and transport illegally in very poor conditions such as using cages that are too small, poor ventilation and poor sanitation. http://www.thedogplace.org/SHELTERS/Shelter-Imports_Witouski-102.asp

AR activists use emotional blackmail with pictures like this stating that “for every breeder puppy that sold a shelter animal is killed” even though the 574,000 RESCUE imports far exceeded the 300,000 available USDA BREEDER pups.

I am for animal welfare and am ashamed the way in which today’s society has a desire to sensationalize the perception of wrong doing in order to villainize another person. Because villains, not facts, makes for good media, our society advocates for prejudice towards our breeders without any regard for the damage we may inflict upon them. The heartbreaking tragedy to animal welfare is that under the current laws, only the animals of a licensed BREEDER are entitled and regulated for providing proper care, while, RESCUES and SHELTERS are not, even though they both are engaging in the same companion animal enterprise.

Did you know that most AR activists, in fact, are in violation of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act?  Most AR activists have never personally visited a USDA kennel and only rely hearsay, doctored photos and edited videos. They use phrases like “adopt don’t shop” and reference all BREEDERS as “puppy mills” in order to achieve a prejudice ban on the sale of regulated pets. AR activists will not advocate for regulating “rescues” as their agenda is for impeding Americans from having a pet of their choice and not for the prevention of animal neglect or cruelty.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Enterprise_Terrorism_Act

This is America, and as Americans, we have the right to choose a permanent family member, from either noble business of a RESCUE/SHELTER or a BREEDER without the fear of unknowingly funding animal abuse or neglect, and/or that one or the other is falsely representing itself or others. Not every breed of animal is suitable for everybody, nor is everybody suitable to care for every “rescue” animal. We have the right to choose, without guilt, to ADOPT OR SHOP, same as we have the right to choose a new Mercedes or a used Ford.  http://www.thecavalrygroup.com/

If you believe in animal welfare and not animal rights, please advocate for legislation for everyone who receives any type of compensation (adoption fee, sale) to be held to a higher standard and mandated to follow the same defined AWA standards of care designed for licensed USDA BREEDERS in order to prevent intentional or unintentional companion animal abuse. Nobody wants to knowingly enable a business to house or care for animals in a manner that would meet the public’s opinion of a “puppy mill”, but when we use the “P” word instead of addressing actual substandard conditions, we, in fact, are supporting animal abuse.
