Drilling Workshop in Kochi (June 5-7, 2006) I was really fortunate to get the opportunity to go to Japan for a planning workshop on current and future IODP and ICDP proposals in Southeast Asia. I was one of only two students who attended. In addition to the excellent professional opportunities at the meeting, I was excited to see a bit of Japan. My prior experience with Japan has only been inside one of the airports. It was a short trip, so I didn't have time for extra sight-seeing, but I at least got to see a lot of a small Japanese city. I don't really have any pictures of the meeting itself since we all pretty much know what people standing up in front of a room talking looks like. But I hope you enjoy what pictures I do have. Oh, and in true Penny fashion, I didn't have one picture on my camera that had me in it. Fortunately, I was not the only one who took pictures, and I snagged a few from Federica Tamburini. She is a fantastic photographer.
And if you are interested, here is the website for the meeting.

Alex's Defense (August 5, 2005)He made it! Alex defended his dissertation, and did it very well. He is now officially Dr. Kolker. That evening he had everyone over to his place for a celebratory barbecue. Here are some pictures from the event. It was lots of fun and we're all proud of him.
Feel free to comment on the pictures and leave a congratulatory remark in the guestbook for him. |

Fall AGU 2004 (December 12-18, 2004)Steve was extra generous this year, and decided to take the entire lab to the AGU fall meeting in San Francisco. Steve, Beth, Alex, Alisha and myself presented. It was a ton of fun... lots of great experiences. It was also nice to have some quality time with all the lab mates. There wasn't a whole lot to take pictures of, as I didn't really make it out for any site-seeing, but I took a few. Enjoy!

Lab Dessert Party 2004 (December 1, 2004)It's a lab tradition that Steve and Catherine have us all to their place during the Christmas season. Everyone brings a yummy dessert (Steve always prepares his bread pudding), and we do "secret holiday gift giving" (a very PC phrase for Secret Santa!). It's always a lot of fun, and it's nice to see everyone away from school... out of muddy clothes, lab coats, and without stressed faces! Thanks everyone for such a great time!

VIMS (September 2004)In September we rented an SUV, loaded it with one of the cores from our January 2004 trip to Bangladesh, and I headed down to Virginia Institute of Marine Science to split and describe the core. I was there for a week, and worked the whole time. It was my first experience splitting and describing a core, and I had a blast. I actually went back a few weeks later for sampling, but I don't have any pictures of that. Anyway, thanks everyone for such a great experience!
