This Pinto is in the condition Ive been looking for. No rust and pretty straight. Its a V6, auto and has A/C, power steering and brakes. Just 53,000 miles. Since its a V6 it has an 8" rear end. 9 No Rust
10 Solid floor. The 8" rear is a big plus.

17 78 and 79 Pintos The 79 still has the drag lites on.

19 The rear is up so I can start the suspension swap.
20 First bolt I go to remove breaks. The rest were fine though.
21 The springs are almost ready to remove.

23 Now its the 78s turn.
24 The shocks are Motorcraft parts.
25 Just about ready to go.
26 The springs are out. You can see the Volvo front mount intercooler leaning against the 79 Pinto. More about that later.
27 Mock up. I mocked this up. I was going to use 1"x1" square steel tube as a spacer between the spring mounts. Note that the spring is upside down.
28 I was told that the thing would squeek like crazy without the rubber bushings. I decided to go another route.

30 I cut the sides off the 79s top mount and placed the lowering block between that and the 78s top mount.
31 I had to cut the rubber bushings flush with the top so the block would fit snug.
32 I had to remove some material under the block so it would fit tightly on the mount.
33 Finished. I painted the blocks black. I had to get new u-bolts because the bolts I had made for the 79 were too short after adding the rubber bushings.
34 Finished rear suspension swap.
35 Taking off all the new front suspension parts now.
36 I removed both fenders for easy access.

39 Cant really tell its lowered two inches.

41 Here are the goodies. Moog springs, Hiedts 2" drop spindles, new gas shocks, calipers, hoses, bushings, rotors and ball joints taken off the 79 Pinto.

47 It looks a little lowered now.
48 I think the rear needs to be lower. We'll see what happens when the V6 and auto are removed and the turbo 2.3 and manual are swapped in. The front end should go up a tiny bit. I need to get 135-80-15 tires too. The 165-80-15s I have now rub.
49 The turbo 2.3l engine and T-5 trans about to come out. I cut the radiator support off for more room to work with. I removed the grille and headlights also.
50 Clutch cable interference. This shows where the clutch cable comes in contact with the crossmember. Ive read that a D-9 4 speed trans bell will have the cable up higher. The cable is loose in this pic. The guy I bought the cable bell and fork from said he never had a problem.
51 Cant move the hole. This pic shows that the brace gets in the way of elongating the hole. Some guys have notched the crossmember. I'm thinking of going that route.
52 Done. Much easier this time than on the slanted plywood floor of the plastic garage.
53 Clutch cable and pedal assembly removal. Since the 78 is an auto trans and Im swapping in the T-5 manual trans, I also need to swap in the 79s brake and clutch cable pedal assemblies. Its pretty easy to do.
54 Heres a tip. To collapse the star clip holding the clutch cable in, take a deep socket a little smaller than the hole and push it over the clip. It will collapse and you can pull the cable out from the engine bay side of the fire wall.

57 I'm keeping the rear end and Im going to put the Escort lights in this to see if I like them before doing it to the 78.
58 Im thinking of putting the gate back on and fixing it half open so it can be used as a table.

67 Leaves! Im not going to leave them in there so this Pinto ends up like the 79 Rustomatic. I need to remove them.
68 There are only a few places that can be used for access. The hood hinge holes and the fresh air inlet to the heater box under the dash on the passenger side. The removable cowel cover will be nice. Thats not going to happen for a while.
69 I chose the hood hinge holes. I used a shop vac to clean the area.

100 Engine mounts Im using the 78s engine mounts. They are stamped V/6 but work with the 4 cyl. also.

109 Now to swap out the power brakes to manual. The booster was leaking and the master cylinder has seen better days.
110 Theres a plate that needs to be drilled.
111 Its pretty obvious were the two holes need to be drilled.
112 New cover. I made this cover from the metal that was cut from the hood of the 79 wagon. I added the tape incase someone wanted to do the same. This is a lot easier than unbolting the steering column. At least for me it was. ;)
113 Here it is. The never used master cylinder from the 79 wagon and the scratched up cover. Next time Ill wait until the paint dries thoroughly before installing it.
114 Clutch cable goes here. Just push the rubber plug out and push the cable in.
115 From the left side of the master cylinder to the right. I swapped the Pinto throttle cable with the 88 Turbo Coupe throttle cable. The pintos cable was not long enough. The new master cylinder, then clutch cable is on the right.
116 Finished. This pic. shows the cable attached to the clutch pedal. The M.C. rod connected to the brake pedal and a little bit of the cover.
117 There they are. The clutch pedal will come up when I connect the cable to the trans.. I painted them also. I should paint the gas pedal too.
118 Almost ready to fill. I bent some temporary brake lines. Theyll get replaced with line lock during stage II.
119 Time to notch the crossmember I used a piece of 1/4" thick steel angle. I cut a section out with a sawzall and cutting wax.

126 The rear brakes didnt need replacing. I was going to save time and not rebuild the rear brakes. The bleeders were rusty and one broke. So I went ahead and swapped all the new stuff from the 79. I painted the drums black with high temp engine paint.

128 Bleeding the system. I used a one man bleeder to bleed the lines until the new synthetic brake fluid was running clear.
129 Making room for the turbo. I came up with a better idea than the little notch I was going to use before. I cut a much bigger hole in the fender.
130 The 79 hood to the rescue again. I cut another section of metal out of the 79s hood to use as a cover for the hole in the fender. Im glad I held onto the hood.
131 The cover is rough. I broke the metal in a big brake at work and trimmed it to fit. I used a dead blow hammer to form it a little. Im going to weld the seems and paint it later on. Right now Im just fitting everything. The cover will be removable.
132 Test fitting the Holset turbo. I need to reclock the center section of the turbo so the oil drain is pointing down. Ill do that later on.

139 Transmission mounts. The modified 79 trans mount crossmember is on top and the 78 is on the bottom.I welded a 1/4" thick U-shaped plate to the top of the 79 crossmember. I was using the 86 TC mount which has only one bolt. Im going to use the stock 78 Pinto trans mount and crossmember this time.
140 Fuzzy picture of the trans. mount. I used the original Pinto trans. mount from the C-4. I welded a 1/4" thick steel plate about 4"x4", this time to the underside of the trans mount crossmember. Im just test fitting it right now.
