1 I want to give Jack O'Lantern a mouth like The Rolling Stones's logo. Since there's a slight dent on the right side of it, I figured I'd have the tongue dangling out the other side, like he'd been hit hardby some anti-pumpkin force.
| 2 I sketched a basic idea with a Sharpie to give me a plan of layout. I hate to admit that I bought the pumpkin last Saturday, and I waited until this afternoon to carve it. ( Today is October 31st)
| 3 I bought some inexpensive carving tools from one of those Big Box Arts 'N' Crafts stores. These are for guys who carve duck decoys, fishing lures etc. But they work on pumpkins too.
| 4 I outlined the spaces I intend to leave high and low to give me some guidelines. I'm kind of sorry that I didn't put the eyes and nose up higher on the face, but it's kind of late now.
|
5 Now I'll begin cutting away all the stuff that doesn't fit my idea of what the finished head will look like.
| 6 This grater is one of the most effective tools I've got.
| 7 I'm also thinking that I should have scraped the whole side prior to drawing the features. It's tough to get in between all the details.
| 8 I definitely waited too late to start this, I'm hoping it'll be complete before the Trick or Treaters start roaming the neighborhood.
|
9 I think I'll going to have to enlist the aid of some power tools to get the desired effect in time.
| 10 I'm glad I have a decent afternoon to work on this outdoors, I'm making quite a mess.
| 11 I made the lips much thinner than I would have liked. I'll have to figure out a way to fix that.
| 12 As I shave away the top layer, or 'skin' it looks less like I planned.
|
13 I'm going to drastically undercut the tongue to make it look like it's sticking way out.
| 14 The camera isn't picking up the different shapes I'm giving it, which makes it even harder to see what I'm talking about.
| 15 I'm giving the mouth the most detail and I want to remove the 'guts' so I can see how much work I've got to do for it to look halfway decent.
| 16 It was getting too dark so I had to move inside, now I'm really dreading the clean-up process.
|
17 After cutting out the back, I could see how thick the skin is, giving me a better gauge of how much I can scrape away.
| 18 You can see on the right where I've punched through. I'm also scraping away the sides to help highlight the bug-eyed look and the gaping mouth.
| 19 Now I start to detail the teeth and uvula.
| 20 It's after seven p.m. so I call it quits and move him to his spot on the front porch.
|
21 This is what the visitors will see.
