Costumes that are either intended to be completed or are simply here to showcase what I wish were a possibility but I know will simply never be completed.

Just e-mail me (Tanya) for the password. I have a lot of projects that I want to surprise some people with.

Jedi Atris Tutorial
3. Jedi Atris Tutorial
"I am Atris, Jedi Master… the last historian of the Jedi… the last of the Jedi."

I was inspired to do this costume because it was so unique. I love the variation of the Jedi garb, especially with the Historian markings.

The costume was entered in a contest at Farpoint 08 and won a workmanship award. Improvements I would like to make are: wig, boots, and better blue contacts.

The skirt and shirt were done with a great deal of help from Kristin, unfortunatley, we were so swept up with how well the costume was turning out, we forgot to take pictures! Doh! The skirt is a full circle skirt and the shirt is a slightly altered Jedi tunic.

Underneath the shirt, I wore a longsleeve under shirt to accurately portray the reference photos. I also wore white leggings under the skirt just to complete the look.

SG-1 1969 Tutorial
4. SG-1 1969 Tutorial
This is a FUN costume! During season 2 of SG-1, the team gets sent back in time to 1969 (good year!) via the Stargate and Solar Flares. This was one of the first really funny episodes and definitely one of the most memorable.

I've obviously put together Sam's costume from the show which I happen to find the perfect patterns for. Yay! Putting together this costume has been totally ..... groovy.

SG-1 Tin Man Tutorial
5. SG-1 Tin Man Tutorial
COMTRIA!!!!
I can't believe I didn't think of this before! This will be the 3rd addition to my growing collection of Stargate costumes.

I remember when I first watched Tin Man 8 years ago and funny enough it was one of my favorite episodes from the first season (besides Fire & Water, The Nox, and There but for the grace of God). I doubt this will be the most recognizable costume out there, but within the Stargate community, there's no doubt people will know who I am.

I did Sam's version of the costume, since she's the only girl. It came out pretty good actually. I'm quite pleased. And not to mention it's extremely comfortable.

Approx. Total Cost: $50

Nox Tutorial
6. Nox Tutorial
In the Stargate world, the Nox are my favorite people. So aside from the standard BDU's, this costume is a must for me. This costume was a lot of fun to create! I started with the wig since I knew that the rest of the costume would be worthless if I couldnt' pull that off. And the rest of it is actually fabric glued together to achieve the proper look as seen in the reference pics.

The specific character I used as my base is called Liya. We meet her in Season 1 and she continues to return throught the following 3 seasons. The Nox people are peaceful and highly intelligent. They wont fight, but let's just say you dont wanna mess with them.

Thanks to this costume and my friends nagging me, I won two awards in the Masquerade at Farpoint 2005 - Best First Costume (since it was my first in a contest) and Best in Sci Fi. Weee! Thanks to everyone for their support.

Aayla Secura Tutorial
7. Aayla Secura Tutorial
So, I decided to continue to challenge myself with costuming and do a Twi'lek. And since most of my costumes are usually good guys and not so common, Aayla Secura certainly fit the bill.

A difficult part of this costume is fabric hunting. The brown alligator skin used in the tops she wears and on the belt can be almost impossible to find. I was lucky enough to find something reasonable in the garment districts of NY and Philly. And the best I can do here is wish you the same luck.

The body paint; however, is something I can help with. I found a tiny (i.e. transportable for cons) and cheap airbrush and excellent body paint both on the web. The pictures go into detail with this. You will have to mix the paints yourself to achieve the right shade, but it's not that difficult.

Thank you to everyone for there wonderful comments to this tutorial. I was not expecting such a positive response. I truly hope it has helped others.

Handmaiden Tutorial
8. Handmaiden Tutorial
This was actually Dion's idea. He thought I'd look pretty in it and I liked it cause it's not very common. So, after much trail and error, I'm 'fit for a queen'. LOL. Since captions for these pics can get really long, I thought I'd take the time to describe everything here.

**************************
Dyeing Technique:
*The dress is only yellow and orange. There is no red dye in it at all. The undershirt and belt are both bright red, but that is it. So, I would use Sunshine Yellow RIT Dye and Tangerine Orange RIT Dye. These dyes worked fine, there's no need for the expensive Dharma dyes or anything like that.
*When you're ready to dye, I'd suggest using a sturdy basin (such as a sink) since you'll be swirling the dress around in circles so lines don't form between the colors (dont use your bath tub cause it'll stain). It would probably be best if you had someone help you, so while you are focusing on the dyed part of the dress that's out of the tub, someone else can constantly swirl the rest of it.
*Before you dye the dress, make sure it's hanging RIGHT SIDE UP and PIN the sleeves so they stay in place when you turn it over. The dress has to be dyed after it's sewn together and upside down, since the colors fade from the top.
*First dye the entire dress yellow. Let that set. Then, when you dip the dress in the orange dye, make certain to keep swirling it(circles/up/down) so as to not form a line. And keep in mind how far down you dip it. You dont wanna go too far. Once you've gone as far as you want, quickly lift the dress from the dye bath, but not fully. The dress has two shades of orange. It's important to keep the top portion of the dress in the dye since the hood of the dress is darker than the shoulders. You wont get that affect unless you leave it in longer.
*To enhance the fading affect you get, I would suggest using a foam brush to literally push the orange dye up through the yellow. I have a pic that demonstrates this. It helped a lot with the fading look and also helped eliminate the line between the colors. But be careful as you do this because part of your dress (the hood) will still be sitting in the orange dye.
*When you're done dyeing, hang the dress right side up to dry somewhere. You can choose to leave it upside down, but turning it back over will allow the orange dye to drip down, thus increasing the fading affect even more (believe me, I tried every trick in the book). Also, make sure the dress is as DRY AS POSSIBLE, before you wash it or you'll get a tie-dyed handmaiden.
***************************

Well, I hope this helped some. Trust me, it's not as hard as one would think. I've done it twice now.

Mara Jade Tutorial
9. Mara Jade Tutorial
My second costume upon entering full blown Star Wars fandom. I picked an imperial this time so I could join the 501st Legion. And since Trooper Armor was beyond my budget, I chose a character who wasn't quite as popular (I try to do costumes that aren't done that often) but proved to be equally as fun - Mara Jade. Hence the alias Tanya Jade.

I definitely enjoyed putting together this costume more than some of my others especially since it didn't require much construction on my part. A small confession: I don't realy enjoy "making" the costume as much as I enjoy "wearing" the costume. But at any rate, this allowed me to be inducted in the 501st with the designation SL 2424, so it's been well worth it. I've had several people already ask about this costume, so I hope this tutorial is helpful.

I had the opportunity to meet Shannon at a con and she was able to tell me that the material used for the bodysuit IS vinyl, the ribbing going down the inner thighs is just a pattern sewn into it and the cape was made out of a sandy brown raw silk which they washed to make it look even more rough. Shannon is a truly wonderful person, I hope to see her again at future cons!

Jedi Tutorial
10. Jedi Tutorial
Being a Star Wars fan since I was roughtly 10 years old, it seemed only natural that one day I would make my own costume. Unfortunately, it wasn't until when Episode II came out that I had any friends who were as geeked out about the movies as I was. But while working a summer at target, I met Cat who knew Zippy who was getting ready to do the 2002 NYC Halloween Parade. So Cat and I spent a month putting together our Jedi costumes for that event.

Now since this was my very first fan costume ever, it is admittedly not of the best quality, but I've worn it several times and it hasn't fallen apart yet. The following pictures break down the costume and show, in more detail, the materials used and where to purchase them.

I based my colors, materials, and textures off of Qui-Gon Jinn's costume in Episode I. He's my favorite of the Jedi and his character really struck me. So this is my tribute to him.

Approx total cost: $180.00 (includes lightsaber)
