Golden Ears Trail
After toying with the idea of doing an easy hike for Canada Day, we decided to head up Golden Ears, which happens to be one of the most difficult trails around. Golden Ears is the massive group that dominates Maple Ridge, some 40 km east of Vancouver. The trail is very rough, with plenty of rocks and roots. Although it is 10 km long, it gains 800 of its 1,000 metres of elevation in just 3 km. We came within one km of the top, but were stopped by steep slopes of lingering snow. Well, an excuse to go back!

Our lunch spot. We had already walked 6 km (in about two hours) but were still at the valley bottom.

This is as good as the views got, near the 9 km marker. Our destination was just 1 km away...

The first indication that going on was not a good idea. This traverse was quite hairy without snow equipment.

Proof that we made it to the other side. However, shortly after this, we were stopped by an almost vertical snow slope.

We grabbed a bite, enjoyed what views we could, and then turned around. Like McArthur, we'll be back!
