Michael and Irene on the first day. Corner of Rivadavia and ??
Wax figures of famous guests at the famed Tortoni restaurant. Many great poets, song writers, artists, philosphers and politicians would meet here.
View of inside Tortoni Restaurant
View of stage area in Tortoni's where they have tango demonstrations.
Claudette points out the beautiful floor in the Cultural Center.
Jacarinda trees were in bloom...oops a bus...
Ah...better shot of the Jacarinda tree in La Plaza de Mayo.
This triangular building sits at the corner of the Diagonal Norte, a major street in BsAs.
There is a legend of an Indian girl who died and her beauty turned into this beautiful flowered tree (at Plaza de Mayo).
Monument at the Plaza de Mayo. The mothers of the missing children march around this monument.
The scarves in the stone plaza are for the mothers who wore white scarves while they marched in the Plaza for the 30,000 missing and/or dead children killed by the government.
Irene, Michael, Claudette in a well known San Telmo cafe. There are so many names of patrons carved into the wood that there is barely any uncarved spaces!
Irene and Michael in San Telmo cafe.
La Boca area on El Caminito, the famous street where Tango has its roots. The figures depict scenes from the era.
Irene and Michael on El Caminito in La Boca. (It was raining so the photo appears a bit blurred.)
Well known boxers came here to train and to fight during the hey day of this area.
The first subway train in BsAs. It's wood and the windows open.
Couldn't resist...the dog looked very funny!
The Murillo Restaurant on La Avenida Rivadavia.
Tango musicians between songs at the San Telmo street market.
A street performer at the San Telmo market. The dancer is attached to his shoes and he would pretend to tango with her and entertain the crowd...with a hat to put donations in of course.
In San Telmo...The statue on this building represents the immorality of the times. He has a Bible in one hand, a heater beside him and the Obelisk behind him. There is also a beer but it is only significant because its advertising the bar beneath.
Irene and Michael in a cafe in San Telmo where we met and tried to converse with a very nice elderly "porteno" (local).
Havanna chocolates are world renown and deserve the praise! The coffee drinks and the cholocate treats were delicious!
Joe Cool...oh, no, that's Michael enjoying his coffee at Havanna.
The financial district on La Avenida 9 de Julio - the widest street in the world.
This gold building was very impressive.
Michael in La Plaza L.G. San Martin in the Retiro area next to the upscale shops on Florida Street mall.
...and Irene in the park as well.
Historical building, El Edificio Kavanah)under construction across from the San Martin Plaza.
Irene in front of El Circulo Militar (militar museum/building) in Retiro.
Michael next to the statue of the Lieutenant General San Martin.
Irene and the San Martin statues.
Another shot of Irene and the statue.
This is inside the famous Galeria Pacifico with it's stained glass dome and faceted ceiling. You can see the Argentine Christmas "santa and reindeer" arrived for our trip.
The brochures do more justice but I took the photo anyway...it was so beautiful!!
More of the stain glass dome.
The center of BsAs is marked by this monument, the Obelisk.
Michael enjoying his book in our comfy room...notice the door to our rooftop "patio".
And the messy side of the room!
View from our rooftop looking towards Medrano street.
Looking back (and down) the other direction
El Congresso
The Windmill marks the original use of the land in this area.
The monument in front of El Congresso is fenced in to prevent demonstators from putting political graffitti on it.
Spanish government built this white palace when ruling Argentina.
Irene and Judith, an Argentine native who had been living in Europe and was home for a visit. She gave us a tour of much of BsAs. (Photo take in patio of the Rivadavia house.)
Our bathroom and shower.
Our room was in the back of the house (in the servants quarters) at the very top. Michael looks happier than when he carried the suitcases up there!
Irene in the kitchen holding a "bottle" of milk...actually cardboard...for my cafe con leche.
Michael waiting patiently for me to finish the photos of the house. This a small eating and TV area.
The living room looking out towards the patio. The window has stained glass but it doesn't show up very well.
The fireplace in the living room...notice the leg "statue"?
The large foyer which we used as our dance floor for the party.
Front entryway. No one used this once you had a key for the inside gate.
Irene...just had to have more gelato while down on La Avenida 9 de Julio.
Recoleta cemetary - the first public cemetery on the city of BsAs and the most relevant historical and artistic monument of the country (not the monument in the photo, the cemetary as a whole).
Streets with names so you can find the family vaults with the coffins visible inside.
Michael takes a rest stop in the cemetary.
cool stone and vine covered vault.
One of the larger vaults/monuments in this row.
Note the coffin with the discolored handles!
A very, very old vault. Note the cover over the casket is falling off (or broken?)...and cobwebs.
Aramburu - Militar Presidente de la Nacion.
Some of the plaques on the vault where Evita was originally interred. They moved her body during the revolution so the revolutionaries couldn't steal it.
More placques for Evita Peron.
The Recoleta market with a statue of another general.
Our last night in BsAs at a milonga. John actually did wake up and dance! Irene, Michael, Becky, John L.
Lowell and Evelie, Becky and John in the background at a milonga.
Evelie, Irene, Becky, Lowell, Michael, John
Home from the milonga...what time does that say??? It's AM in case you wondered.
Festival in Matadores. Smoke in background is from outdoor grills. Llamas and ponies for kids.
Lots of stands selling all sorts of items from food to clothes to leather to souveniers.
Another view of the square and the llamas.
Some of the gauchos and dancers in the costumes of the area.
A gaucho and his lady dancing the traditional dance (a flirtatious dance with scarves and fancy footwork).
Caught them in the midst of a great move.
Drummer and band in the restaurant at the Matadores festival.
Becky and Lois - Matadores festival
Irene and Michael at the Matadores festival (restaurant with drummer).
Lynn and Marlene, our Argentine "hostess"...she's not sleeping, just blinked.
Claudette and Evelie at restaurant with the drummer-Matadores festival
