Well...despite the decorations..the Trail Ride started on a funny note!!
We now have two signs! one for each direction of travel on the south canyon road!
What USED to be the USFS 'Jarbidge Campground' is now a PRIVATELY OWNED campground for ALL THE PUBLIC TO ENJOY! The USFS wasn't too keen on getting kicked out!!
This is a little scary!! Russ' truck has grown an emblem!! If it isn't a figment of the imagination..I hope it dis-appears before we go on the trail ride!!
Some of the decorations on the front of Russ' beautiful B1PW!
I drove the B3PW with a US Army Tool (now camping) trailer!
Molly is getting some firewood cut...
Untill she discovered this slightly large mushroom right in the middle of our camp! It's about 18" in diameter!!
Of course, everyone wante to see of it was hollow...so Molly threw it to the ground..and it's solid!!!
Steve Elliot's Unimog lurks in the shade!
Russ and I take a beer break on the small park bench!!
Molly decided that Russ' truck should not be the only one with decorations!
Steve is doing a pre-ride systems check on the 'Mog
Downtown Jarbidge is quiet early in the mornings!
nice and peacefull...
Nice little old mining town..
UNTILL...Niall Irish shows up with the troops!!! This time 9 kids!!
Some nice summer homes..
Getting on the road..
Heading for the Bear Creek summit..
It is a great day for fun!
We take a break after the first 3 miles of 7% grade...
Denise is riding the four wheeler!
The Girls are having fun in the back of the PW!
Digger finds a snowdrift to play in at the summit!
The old M37 does pretty good!
Digger puts the hammer down!!
I come from the top with the PW!
Digger still can't quite get over!
Now he tries another drift..only to high center!!
John to the rescue!!
Once I got rigged, I pulled him right over the top!
Then I try where digger didn't make it..
I high centered too! So Digger had to give me a tug!
heading from Bear Creek summit to Coon Creek summit..
Heading to Coon Creek summit..we encounter the last of the big drifts on the road..opened up just a few days before we arrived!
The snow was pretty deep here!
Nice shot from Russ' truck!
Here I come behind Russ..
At Coon Creek summit we deliberate on where to go next..only four roads to choose from!
So we pose for a picture at the summit..
Then we take a detour..down to an old mining camp for fun..
nice country! Warm too almost 70 degrees!
Here Russ leads the pack into the camp..
The rest follow along
A little BS while we take a break!
An old 'dutch oven'
What a great shot!
What a view!
We are heading down the south side of the summit to find a trail that leads to a snow research station..
Where the $%^& is the road??? I ask..
Ken Sterret watches the deliberations intently!
We finally find the right road!
Here's the Snow Research Cabin!
A nice break for everyone to stretch their legs..
Except the girls!
On the trail again..
Ready to roll!
a short BS break!
It must be getting deep..I had to bail out of the cab!
Even Russ is heading for cover!
Starting out again!
Duffy is 'brushing up' while reading his latest edition of the 'Chimney Sweep' magazine!
Ken rides along with Steve in the 'Mog
Loren and Sheryl Todd's WC-12-T1 now in fancy camo paint so he doesn't have to worry about the trees and brush!
We found a nice shady spot for a lunch break along the Bruneau River..
Loren Todd gets lunch out of the cooler..
Russ and Denise make some sandwiches
enjoying the break..
The girls enjoy the cool river..The temperture was close to 75-80 degrees!
the girls are still having fun!
now that lunch is over ken admires my Buckshot Mudders!
Ken needs another bumper to hold up!
Denise teases Bo with faux food!
Bo thinks Steve is 'holding out'
Rick Sultan cleans my fender..
I'm taking a break with Steve..enjoying the sun..
Digger, Bo, and Steve take a food break..
Ken holding up the bumper of Steve's 'Mog!
Heading on out on the trail again
which way do we go george???
Steve tooling along..
The Wickiup trail is the back way into Jarbidge..
Out in the open heading back to Jarbidge on the Wickiup trail..
Lots of steep climbs and descents!!
Taking another breather on top of a knoll..
Stopped again on another knoll..you can see for 60-100 miles from the knolls!
Digger jeads on down..
he's making good time!
another bladder / beer break!
checking the 'destructions'!
This picture from Rick could easily pass for the 1950's
Same goes for this one!
and of course Duffy's camper!
oh well back in the 21st century!
Steve watches intently before he descends a steep grade..
Rick Sultan in a 'relaxed' moment in the 'Mog!
We are ahead of them!
Great views from the knolls!
We are arount 7500 feet elevation..
Lots of grazing this year
Bo is checking it out!
Another break..
Steve is PROUD to be an American!
It's about a 65 mile round trip!
Back at camp we find that it appears that someone may have been trying to watch us..(See the HAND in the road!) Could it have been a USFS employee???
I finally got the Colors out!
In town, Niall and the squad prepare to depart for the annual trip to the end of the South Canyon road!
Duffy and his Daughter taking it easy
Molly and I are getting turned around to head out..
A great morning profile!!
Duffy and Niall joking around
lookinh south through town
we stop at camp for a briefing of the days trail ride..
We generally do this before any ride..
everyone is there
sometimes there is actually 'usefull' information shared!
most of the time it's just BS!
O.Q. chris Johnson is filling us in on the latest events regarding the fight to keep our public lands OPEN to the PUBLIC!
The next day we head to the end of the famous 'South Canyon Road' Where I was charged with violating USFS regulations in 2003 but I prevailed in US Federal Court, and the Magistrate advised me that I could travel the road 'at any time and as often as I wish" because it is an OPEN ELKO COUNTY ROAD! Here O.Q. 'Chris' Johnson Of the Blue Ribbon Coalition and the Jarbidge Shovel Brigade fords the first creek crossing on the road! We ended up leaving his truck a little farter up the road as it is still quite a rough trip and his 4x4 was not engaging properly..but..at least it's a Dodge!
Chris has her in pretty deep and is now stuck on a submerged rock!
He's almost through but is hung up..
So Steve is going to pull him back and then go ahead of him in order to help him through!
Steve is on through..so Chris is starting out again
Lots of 'bystanders'!
Here comes the Todds!!
Here I come through it..the Girls are hanging on good!!
Steve putts along in the 'Mog..
'Chris' Johnson is following..we parked his truck near here.
here comes Digger!
Loren navigates through the trees..
nearing a near forgotten campsite..now usable again! Thanks to our keeping the road open!
At the detour, Chris is getting some measurements for the record.
The Jarbidge River is fairly high this year!
This is where we go..
More bystanders!
Now for the fun part! Steve rolls on down into the creek at the third crossing..
right on through..
Chris watches as Steve proceeds
on into the trees..and the old river bed..(the river has diverted itself to where the roadway was)
There goes Digger and Bo!
The water is about 2 feet deep..
On through with no trouble..
A shot from Digger's truck behind Steve..
Digger climbs out of a ditch..
Here I come taking up the rear..
Niall has a big smile when we get to his point of breakdown!!
Steve is on a roll!
Steve, Digger, and I were the only ones to take our trucks all the way in! Niall still has a bad taste in his mouth from the 2003 trip when he broke his tailights, muffler and an axle on his M37, and Russ' truck is way toooo pretty for this roughhousing!!
Steve heads around the bend to the end of the road..
The outhouse is LOCKED UP! No longer available for public use..thanks to our friends at the USFS!
The infamous 'OUTHOUSE'
Note the large 'USFS' padlock!
Boy..Rick rode all this way just to have to go elsware!
Meanwhile, a few go around back to open the vault and see how full it is this year..
Dutchess is guarding the outhouse so no one will attempt entry! (Plus she loves the shade break!)
In the vault...looking for 'browns'!
Only an inch or so of run-off water...no 'browns' in sight!
The USFS Notice posted near the outhouse explaining why it is closed!
A nice bulletin board!
Taking a break for lunch..
Chris is telling more stories!!
We line the trucks up at the wilderness area trailhead!
Getting ready to head back out..
It was a very nice warm day!
Looking back down the trail we came in on!
Loading 'em up!
Back at the beginning of the disputed part of the County Road..
On the way back to Wendell on Friday afternoon..I lead the group with the trusty old B3PW with my 'camp' trailer..
Niall and the squad are behind me with his Diesel powered M37 and trailer...then Rick Sultan is taking up the rear..
The tool trailer worked very well to stow all the camping gear required for me and Molly..
Nice summer day in Idaho!
Saturday morning we are lined up for the annual Dairy Day parade..there were over 190 entries this time!
The sign says it all!
The Military rigs head up the parade!
Stan Standall's nice M-37
Looking good today!
Even Gary DeMoss was able to get his freshly done WW2 3/4 ton Dodge carryall into the act!
Lots of people! Lots of parade entries!
Here comes the Power Wagons!!
I take up the lead position..
One of the many floats..
A nice old Ford cab-over-engine tow truck with a Holmes Wrecker!
and a nice ride for the dignitaries...
The military rigs are lined up!
Everyone admires Gary's carryall!
You just can't resist a fresh restoration!
and the BS continues on!!
This is under Niall's hood on his M-37 Dodge!
And his squadron's mascot!
Russ' ROKON all wheel drive motorcycle! Vintage 1960s.. He would not ride it in the parade!!
Russ (Probably Denise) Took these shots of the Salmon Dam along the road to Jarbidge, near Rogerson, Idaho.
It is a very old concrete arch dam..built around 1910!
It's about 350 feet tall and only 250 feet wide!
