Myself, Daughter Molly, Digger Dan & Linda Garrett, Niall Irish, and Ken & Shari Sterrett ventured to Jarbidge to do our part in keeping county road #748 OPEN!! We had many dignitaries on hand, a Nevada State Assemblyman, an Elko County Commissioner, and many members of the infamous "Jarbidge Shovel Brigade" We drove once again to the end of the road, only to find the outhouse was locked up!! It was a beautiful day! The trip went very well, in fact, the road has had so much traffic on it since we saw it in June, that it only took us 20 minutes to get to the end!! We had only two trucks, My 1952 B3PW, and Digger's M-37. Nial did not bring his M-37, nor Ken bring his WM300 (It was not ready yet) We met lots of great folks! The lamb BBQ was fantastick!! In preperation for this trip, I spent my 47th birthday helping Ken Sterrett start assembling his truck, WE must be getting rusty as we both overlooked a few very obvious snafus that made the job way more interesting than it should have been!!! 12-01-05 I had to close the guestbook due to spammers, sorry!

Feature article in the "Times News' Twin Falls, Idaho just after this trip! The editor mistakenly noted I was the head of the 'Shovel Brigade' This trip was the first time I ever had met anyone connected to the Shovel Brigade!! They are a great bunch of folks!!
This is the official county road designation for what is known as the 'south canyon road' These signs were posted in 2000 as part of the rebuilding work on the road. Elko County also clearly marked the other RS-2477 roads in the area!
This is the beginning of the difficult section of Elko County Road #748 It is well marked with county signs! This one warns of 'ROAD HAZARD AHEAD'
a second 'ROAD HAZARD AHEAD' warning farther up the road...
The group of vehicles heading for Urdahls Campground to drop off a picnic table..
Digger Dan heading up the pair of vintage Dodges!
Ken gets a shot of me dropping into the water near the beginning of road #748 His wife Shari is riding on the picnic table in the back of my truck!!
I am rounding a corner awaiting the removal of a deadfall tree by the others..
Digger heads into the detuor route.. I will follow in a moment...
My B-3-PW ready to roll down the embankment...my passenger was the Hon. John Carpenter, Nevada State Assemblyman!!
Ready to proceed through the roughest section..the last .3MI. of the south canyon road #748 Lots of spectators this trip!
winding up the road between the trees...
The shovel brigade crew cuts out a deadfall tree...
Here'tis...the rock that ate my running board!! This is a very rough stretch of the road just a few hundred yards from the end of the road..
Luckily, it only bent in the middle...the brackets are fine!!...
At the Snowslide Gulch trailhead..this trip only took us 1 hour!! The road has been well used since our initial trip in June!!
I had only one mishap...I slid sideways into a large boulder..thus I now have a slightly modified running board!!
John Q. Public is pointing to an interesting notice on the recently pumped out privvy!! (I was surprised to see the sign posted when I arrived too!)
It clearly states: "Notice" "this outhouse is for official US Forset Service use only" (They locked the public out after it was cleaned a couple weeks ago)
The door handle has been replaced by a quite substantial chain and padlock setup!! Only the USFS has the key!!
Group outhouse foto!!
Here we are coming back out! Molly is riding side-saddle on the front fender!
The Bar-B-Que afterward was fantastick!!
Digger and I heading out on the trail Suunday.
We went to the meadow near the top of the first pass, then took a side road that meanders upward about 2500 feet in elevation!
Digger points out the modified rear fender that occurred on Saturday while travelling road #748!! Reminds me of the WW2 1/2 ton dodge!!(Same road that got my running board!!)
Nice day! Nice view! Nice FLAG!!
At the summit! Digger and I take a break...Molly shoots the picture!
Another shot by Molly!!
Digger heads down a steep grade!!
He's about halfway down!
The road we came down is behind my truck!
What a great day for a drive!!
A little windy up here on the ridge!
Digger is at the bottom so it is my turn!!
We explore a road that we have never gone on.. it proceeds into the trees..
I am coming through where the trees were laying..
a little tight...
Digger is having FUN!!
On the way out I pose the PW for a picture or two on top of a rockpile...
We are at approx. 9,000 feet elevation here...
Digger ties his M-37 down on the trailer than we are heading for home!! It was a great weekend!!
Sept. 21, 2003...Here's Ken's 1961 WM-300. Our plan is to get it ready for the trip to Jarbidge NV, on the 18th of Oct.
It had a 251 'Spitfire' motor with 5 cylinders! (#6 was missing a connecting rod!)
Here's Ken prepping the flywheel before we assemble the bell housing and clutch on the freshly rebuilt 251 he bought that came out of a 2ton truck.
here is the 'custom' ventilation hole in the side of the old block.
The bell housing is on! there is something wrong with this picture that will snafu us later!
we bolted the transmission and pto on and now are attempting to stab the engine into the truck...
Then after repeated attemps .. the engine just would not fit!! I finally figured out our problem...this engine has a 'front sump' pan!! If we could have set the engine, the pan would be resting on the front axle housing!!! Oh well..back out she comes!!
So, we need the pan off the original engine...however..notice the small hole near the middle bottom of the picture...
The pan is off..note the comfortable living quarters made by some critter that gained access through the large hole in the block!!
the oil pick-up tube is smashed beyond repair..so we hope the one in the rebuilt motor will work with the rear sump pan!
Ken discovers this special 'right hand' connecting rod in the pan!!
The correct pan is now on the engine..time passes on...
in we go again, this time it fits very well!! except....
The front motor mount has a different spacing of the bolts than the PW type!!!
So, Ken is removing the PW mount and he will drill a pair of holes in the motor mounting frame to fit the correct mount...His helper is 'Dog'
It appears that 'Dog' feels this to be a 'laid back' type of job!!
Finally!! About 3 hours longer than expected...the motor is IN!! I could not have had more fun on my birthday!!! In fact, Ken's wife Sheri cooked me a nice birthday supper too! (My wife had to work)
Here I am assembling the last wheel and brakes..then bleed the system and it should be ready to 'stop'!!
