"This mounted to a alum plate to act as a heat sink." --Jeffrey, 03/09/07
"Don's comments are below..... Fuel gauge voltage regulator fix I found a single 7805T produces too much heat. I used a 7808T feeding a 7805T, this set up drops it from 12v to 8v then from 8v to 5v splitting the heat between two units. I riveted both to a 1/8” thick piece of aluminum for a nice big heat sink. Output results are a constant 4.99v and the gauges function correctly. There is no need to remove the factory voltage regulator from the fuel gauge and if the voltage regulator has quit working your gauges is smoked. Please refer to the picture and the wiring diagram. As you can see by the black wires I grounded the voltage regulators and the instrument cluster to my heat sink. The yellow is the 5v feed to the gauges, the red is 12v in, and the blue is 7808T out to the 7805T in. Hope this helps and everyone should do this to save their gauges.
