Peru: The Inca Trail & the Amazon 2003
Here are just a few (of the 100s of images I took) on our May 2003 trip to Peru and the Amazon. The main purpose of our trip was to attend the spectacular Inti Raymi & Corpus Christi Festivals &  to  hike parts of  the Inca Trail and  explore Machu Pichu. We did all this  - and more  - like  rafting  down the Urubamba River, hiking to the top of Huayna Pichu,  listening to the best music of the Andes in Aguas Calientes , eating "cui" (guinea pig), alpaca, and chewed plenty of coca leaves with the locals (to prevent altitude sickness of course). We visited schools, were  guests in Peruvian homes, and stayed at 3 different lodges on the banks of the great Amazon River where we hiked through the rainforest, John fished (and caught!) Piranha, we were lucky enough to see the rare Pink Dolphins of the Amazon, we went birding, - those (besides of course Inti Raymi) were the highlights. It was one of our best adventures.

See the tall peak behind me? That's Huayna Pichu- the trail to the top is definitely not for those who suffer from claustrophobia or have a fear of heights.

Made it to the top of Huayna Pichu! See the zig-zag road behin and below me? That is the road Up to Machu Pichu (which we took by bus) - also not for the faint of heart- especially when it's muddy.

We  spent several days in lodges along the mighty Amazon River

Here is one of the lodges - the wildlife around the lodge was very tame - birds flew in regularly

We stopped at a Yagua Village where a few of the elders showed off their skills with poison (harvested from the Dendrobates frogs) arrows/darts.

Back at our lodge, we met a few of the "resident" creatures. Though they were not fenced in and could roam completely freely - they were tame.

We went out at night, with flashlights, looking for nocturnal insects and spiders (here we found Tarantulas climbing down from the canopy to hunt at night)- all this in the rainforest around the lodge

Many of the insects were slow moving - look what landed on me!

Loved reading about your adventures in particular Peru and Amazon.  Photos are amazing.  We did Guatemala and Honduras too with Caravan.  It was fabulous.  Could you please recommend the tour Company used by you on your trip to Peru?  This would be really helpful as there are so many out there.  Thanks in advance for your help.
