| Gary Earl Givens, 63, Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.
Gary was born March 2, 1945, in Clarendon, Texas, the son of James Earl Givens and Ella Mae Sullivan. He married Lindsey Rose Dowell in 1967 in Amarillo. He graduated from Tascosa High School in 1963 and WTSU in 1968. He joined the Air Force as an officer, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross for a mission over North Vietnam. He obtained his CPA certificate and worked at Plains Chevrolet, Brooks Wilson CPA firm and Santa Fe Energy in Amarillo.
He moved in 1990 to Artesia, where he worked at Yates Petroleum Corp. for 17 years, retiring in July 2007. He attended First Baptist Church in Artesia. He loved teaching the Bible and was very thankful for the faith instilled in him by his parents and Bible teachers.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bob Givens of Keyes, Okla.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years; five daughters, Kristi Kendall and husband Jim of Amarillo, Paula Givens and Hannah Palomin and husband Joey, all of Artesia, Abigail Allen and husband Matt of Carlsbad and Stacia Givens of Lubbock, Texas; seven grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Owenita Givens; two nephews, Weston Givens and wife Ruth Ann and Juston Givens and wife Casie of Oklahoma; his father-in-law, R.L. Dowell; a sister-in-law, Delyse Baker and husband Rick of Amarillo; and his uncles, aunts and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. (01/31/09) Gary received The Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight May 21, 1972. He also received 2 Air Medals for Meritorious Achievement in '71 & '72. Gary went to Officers Training School in San Antonio in the fall of '68; November 1968 until October 1969 in Sacramento (Mather AFB) for flight school; November-April (?) of 1969-'70 in Tucson (Davis Monthan AFB) for navigator school. From Tucson we went to Miami to Homestead AFB for overseas training May '71-April '72. Then he left for Udorn Thailand for a year where he flew 217 combat missions in the F-4 Phantom over North Vietnam. He was in the Triple Nickel squadron. In '73 we were in Alamogordo but he had to go TDY back to Thailand for three months. (10/11/15) |
