Medal of Honor Recipient Mr George Wahlen tears off the bubble wrap that was protecting the cane presented to him by the Blue Star Riders. The cane was carved by Master Carver Jack Nitz from the Easteren Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association.
And the Eagle leaves the nest... The Eagle is free to fly as Mr Wahlen pulls the last of the protective bubble wrap off of his new cane.
Mr Wahlen and Blue Star Rider Representative Gordy Ewell discuss plans for a series of cane races. Mr Whalen is very pleased with the very fine craftsmanship of his cane.
Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center Director James R. Floyd admires the fine craftsmanship of the Medal of Honor Cane.
The Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center is named after Medal of Honor Recipient George E. Wahlen. So, Mr. Wahlen and Director Floyd always have something to talk about. Today however, the talk is anything but the medical center.
Mrs Wahlen (on the right), and Mrs Susan Huff are able to enjoy a visit that is not buisiness related for a change. Mrs. Huff is over Public Affairs for the Salt Lake City V.A.
I know how solid Mr. Wahlen's new cane is, so I am making sure the hug is a very short and proper (ha, ha). Mrs. Wahlen is a very kind and wonderful host, and we were very grateful to be invited into their home.
We had the pleasure of meeting two of Mr. Wahlen's daughters during our visit. What a wonderful family.
Mr. Wahlen signed a copy of his book "The Quiet Hero," for Staff Sergeant Campbell of the 640th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) while we were there. Sergeant Campbell was kind enough to be my driver, since I can not longer drive due to injuries received in Iraq.
Thank you Mr and Mrs Wahlen, for making the day a special one. And thank you Mr Wahlen, for your actions on Iwo Jima (in Hell) that are still impacting people in a very positive manner, each and every day. Semper Fi.
