Tranquebar/Tarangambadi, India; 1/18/2005. Kamudavalli Peter is a college professor of Tamil Studies at the TBMLC College (a Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church college). She volunteered to be the administrator at the Tranquebar orphanage caring for 90-some girls ages five to 15 who are orphaned by the tsunami. "It's very important to protect the girls for being sexually exploited," she said. Peter showed us how each girl's file contains her picture stapled to a picture of her home, or what is left of her home--which is sometime just the ground it stood on. Photo by Sue Edison-Swift/ELCA

Tranquebar/Tarangambadi, India; 1/18/2005. The Rev. Gunalan Packiaraj is pastor of New Jerusalem Lutheran. They were in the middle of Sunday Services when the tsunami hit; they ran to the roof for safety. The historic church suffered some damage. There were 600 deaths in Tranquebar, half were children. There have been no funerals for the dead as yet; "first we have to feed people," said Packiaraj. Photo by Sue Edison-Swift/ELCA
