ELCA members visited congregations of the Iglesia Luterana Evangelica Peruana and projects in Peru supported by ELCA World Hunger. Gifts to ELCA World Hunger help partners implement urban community kitchens, programs for at-risk youth, rural irrigation projects, and development of small businesses and cooperatives.

The sanctuary will come second - the congregation's first priority is completing the community kitchen so community members have a place to gather for low-cost meals and meetings.

An important part of the program is art classes - kids at Huchuy Runa study under local artisans to learn crafts they can later turn into job skills.

Huchuy Runa teaches kids that they have rights--to food, to be recognized as citizens, to health care, and to be treated fairly without discrimination. Some Huchuy Runa alumns are now teachers, agronomists, and local artisans.
