Melbourne (August 10-13, 2004)| I spoke at the GITA conference in Melbourne and my presentation seemed to go down well. In addition to seeing a fair bit of Melbourne, we went for a drive along the Great Ocean Road to see the Twelve Apostles, and drove down to Philip Island where we saw koalas and penguins. Thanks to our friends James and Amy for their hospitality, and to my friend Ken for lending us his convertible which made the Great Ocean Road a lot more fun! |

Sydney (August 14-15, 2004)| We went down to Sydney for the weekend and continued our global opera tour, seeing Manon at the Sydney Opera House (following on from Santa Fe and Glyndebourne). On Sunday we took the ferry out to Manly Beach, which we really enjoyed. |

New Zealand (August 17-20, 2004)| We had a great time in New Zealand. We stayed with our friends Peter and Carol Britnell in Kuratau, on Lake Taupo, and got to see their olive grove, vineyard and the new house they're building there. We saw several geothermal features including Craters of the Moon and Orakei Korako. We stayed with another friend, Lesley Bundock, on her farm on the Coromandel Peninsula. And we finished up in Auckland with a stay at the impressive Hilton hotel on the quayside. |
