Wagtoons
. This is my collection of caricatures of RICHARD WAGNER, plus a few of his contemporaries.
All illustrations here shown originate from vintage material printed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Some of the cartoons are well-known, having been used many times in books and other publications over the years.
It is doubtful, however, whether you will have seen them looking quite so sharp, fresh and clear!
Each image was carefully photographed then painstakingly enhanced and digitally repaired in an attempt to show them at their best.
Bookworms [or readers of Wagner opera programmes] will recognise the common caricatures, but many, to my knowledge, have not been published for many years.
Richard Wagner, acknowledged by learned critics as, probably, the most 'complete' musician the world has ever seen, was unmercifully pilloried for many years - principally by the French who despised him intensely, and hated his compositions as well.
There cannot be another person in the whole of history, surely, who has been thus vilified? {The cartoonist, MATT, who contributes to the British newspaper, 'The Telegraph' would have a field day if Wagner were alive today!] . To view the album:
