Welcome to the Cavy Spirit family of albums, including Cavy Cages!

Cavy Spirit is a Guinea Pig Rescue and Adoption home. We take in abandoned guinea pigs and place them, healthy and happy, in high quality, permanent homes. We focus on education and public awareness of the proper respect and care that these and all animals deserve. We are committed to breaking the chain of neglect, abuse, and abandonment.

Debbie's 3-Story
1. Debbie's 3-Story  (October 28, 2003)
This is Debbie's 3 story cage with ramp. From Debbie: "The basic setup is made from cubes & coroplast. The ramps are made from standard 6" pine from Home Depot. The ramps are easily removable and are tight-fitted and use pressure to keep them in place. The ramp has traction tape (used for stair treads) to give the piggies footing and also keeps their nails trimmed because of the sand paper finish. Areas that would expose them to a fall are enclosed by ramp or the cube material. We put holes in the ramp for reduction of overall weight, light transmission, and observation of the piggies. We have had this set-up now for about a month and have not had any problems with it to speak of. The cleaning is done by removing the ramps and 4 hutches and the hanging hammock, we use a small dust pan and brush to clean the levels out and replace with fresh materials. It takes about 5-10 minutes to do a complete cage clean-up. The cage is very sturdy and can be picked up because all sections and corners have plastic electrical ties binding them tightly together."

Lucky
5. Lucky  (December 31, 2004)

On Chrismas Day, as a family was gathered in their livingroom, they saw a large hawk come swooping in and land in the middle of their lawn. It had a white ball of fur that was "wheek, wheek, wheeking." It dropped the guinea pig which ran scurrying for the bushes. They ran out and with the help of friends managed to capture the terrified guinea pig. The hawk flew up to the fence and waited and watched for over an hour. Robbed of his Christmas Day dinner, the hawk finally flew away frustrated and hungry.

Normally, hawks make the killing strike with their back talon through the internal organs of their prey. This may have a been a younger hawk with less experience.

Cavy Spirit Residents
6. Cavy Spirit Residents  (December 6, 2004)
Sponsor a Special Piggie!

These piggies are permanent residents at Cavy Spirit. If we can find a great adopter that would be willing to take any of these groups and provide them with the proper care and veterinary treatments, that would be great. However, those kinds of adopters are very rare.

Most of these guinea pigs are senior citizens that have health issues. Also, while a few of the guinea pigs are in good health, some of those are in highly bonded groups with other unadoptable guinea pigs.

We currently have 3 groups of permanent residents (12 piggies total):
The Tina Group (5), The Picachu Group (3), and the Lucy Group (4).

This album is of the piggies that come to our rescue in a sad state. Acorn and Thumper were dumped on the doorstep of an SPCA Thrift Store. They came to us a few days later. Photos 1-19 were taken when we received them on 3/25. Photos 20-32 were taken after coming back from the vet on 3/26. Photos 33-43 were taken a couple of days later on 3/28. Photos 44-63 were taken at Day 12 on 4/5.

Thumper and Acorn are now GREAT! They were back to normal in LESS THAN ONE MONTH. I didn't have time to take photos until 7 weeks, but they were quite fine in less than 4 weeks.

10. Adoptables
Want to Adopt a Guinea Pig or Two? Please see our adoption requirements and online application for these lovely piggies on the Adopting page. Some guinea pigs are available to be paired up with a guinea pig that you may have at home. But some of them are bonded pairs or trios and need to stay together. Please do not expect questions posted in the guestbook below to be answered. You must contact us via email or phone or online adoption application for a response. Please note that any guinea pigs currently in foster homes are so indicated with the town they are living in. We usually bring the guinea pigs someone is interested in to the main Cavy Spirit rescue in San Mateo for the adoption process.

Hollister Rescue
19. Hollister Rescue  (July 2, 2002)
Hollister Guinea Pig Rescue (July 2, 2002) 187 guinea pigs were seized from a woman in Hollister on 7/2/02 by Animal Control Officers. She had been breeding them for 11 years. She "traded the babies to pet stores for food" -- presumably for money for food for herself (there were no other animals). They were housed outdoors, next to a trailer. The animal control officers found empty water bottles and empty food dishes and at least one dead guinea pig outside of the cages. As you can see, the technique used for cleaning cages was to throw new shavings on top of old shavings -- for a long time. In one cage, the pile of feces was so high, the hair on the backs of the pigs was poking through the rusted cage wire on the top of the cage as they walked along. The compacted feces and bedding was filled with maggots and worms and other gross stuff. HAC (Hollister Animal Control) also expects to find the carcasses of dead guinea pigs as they sift through the mountains of ancient bedding. The stink was overpowering. It took three HAC trucks to transport all the cages from the residence to the shelter. At the time of the seizure, she wanted her pigs back. And she wanted the officers to leave the cages and only transport them in small carriers. The pigs were supposedly fed rabbit pellets and vitamin C in the water. She has now officially surrendered the guinea pigs and we must find new homes immediately. As pregnant sows deliver, we expect the numbers to climb to 300+ guinea pigs very soon. Please visit the new HOLLISTER page for the latest information on the rescue and the status of the guinea pigs as well as how you can help.

Monterey Rescue
23. Monterey Rescue  (September 9, 2002)
The Latest Guinea Pigs from Monterey In August LAST YEAR, 350 guinea pigs were rescued from a breeder who had been evicted from their home. They called the SPCA of Monterey to take their guinea pigs. These people had been breeding guinea pigs for biomedical research for 30 years. Most have been placed, but these poor guys have been living at the Monterey Shelter for a YEAR now!! They need a loving home! Please adopt one of these piggies and show them the love and attention that they've never had. Many of the Monterey pigs that have been adopted have made very sweet, lovable pets. You can still view the photo album of all the guinea pigs the day after the surrender, on Sept 1, 2001. We were there and got a lot of piggie photos! Go to the MHS album. Most of the white guinea pigs are FEMALES. Also, despite the lighting of the photo, they all have black eyes. BUT, when we went down to Monterey to get what we thought were the remaining 36 guinea pigs, they had just received in a new group of guinea pigs in very bad condition. The photos in the vehicle are from the trip back up from Monterey (a three hour trek). Photos of M1 through M20 were taken at MHS a while ago when we were planning on doing another trip with them. We will be checking those photos against who we brought back as as well as who is now at PHS for adoption. So, some of those photos may change. Currently ALL of these guinea pigs are at one person's home. She and her family are fostering them for us.

Bay Area Shelter Guinea Pigs
24. Bay Area Shelter Guinea Pigs  (September 6, 2002)
Guinea Pigs at San Francisco Bay Area Shelters We are starting with the abundance of guinea pigs at the Peninsula Humane Society. We gave 8 from the Monterey Humane Society to PHS when PHS had none. A few others have been surrendered since. But, the big problem now (Sept 6th) is a recent seizure from a woman (not right mentally) of 36 guinea pigs that all have very bad mites that were found running loose in her house. No food or water. These pigs will be held as evidence for 14 days. Then it depends on whether or not she surrenders them as to whether or not they have to continue to hold them as evidence.

The Guinea Pigs-A-Go-Go Rescue Railroad Trip
Jackie, Becky, Sophie, and Oreo (faithful companion) set off across the country on Monday, August 5th. The album starts the Sunday evening, prior to the trip, with final preparations. They returned safe and sound Friday at 5:30pm on August 16th. An 11-day, 5700-mile trip! One pig was brought back from the mid-west to go to Vancouver, Canada. One pig got mixed up and didn't make his destination and so will be finding a great new home in the Bay Area after touring the States!

30. Adopted!
These are photos of the Cavy Spirit piggies who have gone to new homes. Adopted Guinea Pigs! This is certainly not an inclusive list of all of our adoptions because quite a few get adopted before we get a chance to get photos taken and published on the website. And we didn't start doing this procedure with the photos until fairly recently. But, it's nice to see so many adoptions. Just a note: we don't update the description with dates of adoptions. We just move the original photos and descriptions and comments to this album.

This album highlights photos of Kara's cage. She made a base using grids and a stand using grids. She has some allergies in their family. They lift the entire cage off of the stand and carry the grids with the coroplast outdoors for cleaning.
The bright little things at the connectors are cable ties or zip ties. They are plastic ties available at hardware and home improvement stores used to bind wire cords together to keep them from being messy. You can buy a big package of them for just a dollar or two. Kara used the zip ties to make the cage very strong by reinforcing all of the connections.
These photos also show how she made a hack rack out of an extra grid. She looped some cable ties together at the top. She cut some extra Coroplast for the back of the hay rack to prevent spillage out the back of the cage.

Permanent Residents
41. Permanent Residents  (November 12, 2003)
These guinea pigs are pretty much considered permanent residents at Cavy Spirit. Most would be adoptable, but only to a special home to someone with significant guinea pig experience willing to provide proper and on-going vet care. Some of these pigs are senior citizens and have been with us too long to rehome. Some have some on-going medical issues and a couple we are suspicious about with future medical issues. A few are otherwise healthy, but we won't split up a bonded pair or group if one has issues.

Our vet bills are high as we continue to provide excellent care for these animals. Any contributions are greatly appreciated.

56. Cavy Cages - Da-Mars Custom Cage  (March 6, 2002)
Cavy Cages is a Guinea Pig Cages website providing information on proper guinea pig cages and sizes. Before you buy a cage, check out this website. The Cubes and Coroplast design is superior in many ways. If you have any questions, please post them on the Cavy Cages Forum. Feel free to post comments in the guest book and on individual photos, but please post questions on the forum.
This album is about our custom commercial cage experience. We ordered this cage, 30" x 36" from Da-Mars. A larger version of the one they normally sell. We asked for a top loading door. We thought that would be better than the front, and we asked for 6" side (urine guards) so we wouldn't have the same complaint we have with the other commercial cages with the pans being to shallow. We also chose a cage size that would be comparable to Martin's large 30" x 36" cage so they could be compared.
We did not want to go the trouble to complete the cage set up with bedding and pigs and whatnot. It would have been a complete and total waste of time for us as we have no intention of keeping this cage. As it is, it was a bit of an expense and an effort to prove a point and satisfy our curiousity. Lesson learned? Breeder cages are breeder cages. Plain and simple. Breeder cages are not pet cages and should not be confused as such.

This cage offers no redeeming value as a pet cage over other solutions presented on Cavy Cages.

Absolutely, positively can't find Coroplast? Linoleum works also. It won't last quite as long and if the cage is long, may put some pressure on the middle grid walls, but it is still workable. You also may want to be very sure that they don't nibble on edges. See the options page for ideas on preventing chewing.

Cavy Spirit - Wilma
63. Cavy Spirit - Wilma  (September 23, 2001)

Wilma is one of the Monterey Mommas from a breeder for labs with who knows what kind of breeding practices, but definitely inbreeding has contributed to her problems. The large baby came first as a breech birth (feet first). She needed help getting that first baby out which was stillborn, underdeveloped, and deformed. Then came the second--Phoenix. Phoenix' story is on the web site.

Please post any breeding comments on the Forum available from the Cavy Rescue site. Thank you.

We focus on education and public awareness of the proper respect and care that these and all animals deserve. We are committed to breaking the chain of neglect, abuse, and abandonment. We had so many guinea pigs from the Hollister rescue with BUMBLEFOOT, we have created a separate album to display the photos. And this isn't all of them. For more information on Bumblefoot and how to treat it, please see this Guinea Lynx page.
