Debbie's 3-Story
1. Debbie's 3-Story  (October 28, 2003)
This is Debbie's 3 story cage with ramp. From Debbie: "The basic setup is made from cubes & coroplast. The ramps are made from standard 6" pine from Home Depot. The ramps are easily removable and are tight-fitted and use pressure to keep them in place. The ramp has traction tape (used for stair treads) to give the piggies footing and also keeps their nails trimmed because of the sand paper finish. Areas that would expose them to a fall are enclosed by ramp or the cube material. We put holes in the ramp for reduction of overall weight, light transmission, and observation of the piggies. We have had this set-up now for about a month and have not had any problems with it to speak of. The cleaning is done by removing the ramps and 4 hutches and the hanging hammock, we use a small dust pan and brush to clean the levels out and replace with fresh materials. It takes about 5-10 minutes to do a complete cage clean-up. The cage is very sturdy and can be picked up because all sections and corners have plastic electrical ties binding them tightly together."

Lucky
5. Lucky  (December 31, 2004)

On Chrismas Day, as a family was gathered in their livingroom, they saw a large hawk come swooping in and land in the middle of their lawn. It had a white ball of fur that was "wheek, wheek, wheeking." It dropped the guinea pig which ran scurrying for the bushes. They ran out and with the help of friends managed to capture the terrified guinea pig. The hawk flew up to the fence and waited and watched for over an hour. Robbed of his Christmas Day dinner, the hawk finally flew away frustrated and hungry.

Normally, hawks make the killing strike with their back talon through the internal organs of their prey. This may have a been a younger hawk with less experience.

Cavy Spirit Residents
6. Cavy Spirit Residents  (December 6, 2004)
Sponsor a Special Piggie!

These piggies are permanent residents at Cavy Spirit. If we can find a great adopter that would be willing to take any of these groups and provide them with the proper care and veterinary treatments, that would be great. However, those kinds of adopters are very rare.

Most of these guinea pigs are senior citizens that have health issues. Also, while a few of the guinea pigs are in good health, some of those are in highly bonded groups with other unadoptable guinea pigs.

We currently have 3 groups of permanent residents (12 piggies total):
The Tina Group (5), The Picachu Group (3), and the Lucy Group (4).

This album is of the piggies that come to our rescue in a sad state. Acorn and Thumper were dumped on the doorstep of an SPCA Thrift Store. They came to us a few days later. Photos 1-19 were taken when we received them on 3/25. Photos 20-32 were taken after coming back from the vet on 3/26. Photos 33-43 were taken a couple of days later on 3/28. Photos 44-63 were taken at Day 12 on 4/5.

Thumper and Acorn are now GREAT! They were back to normal in LESS THAN ONE MONTH. I didn't have time to take photos until 7 weeks, but they were quite fine in less than 4 weeks.

Adoptables
10. Adoptables
Want to Adopt a Guinea Pig or Two? Please see our adoption requirements and online application for these lovely piggies on the Adopting page. Some guinea pigs are available to be paired up with a guinea pig that you may have at home. But some of them are bonded pairs or trios and need to stay together. Please do not expect questions posted in the guestbook below to be answered. You must contact us via email or phone or online adoption application for a response. Please note that any guinea pigs currently in foster homes are so indicated with the town they are living in. We usually bring the guinea pigs someone is interested in to the main Cavy Spirit rescue in San Mateo for the adoption process.
PLEASE NOTE: COMMENTS that contain repeating letters or punctuation WILL BE DELETED! (for example: awwww)

Adoptable Guinea Pigs from the Hollister Guinea Pig Rescue! All of the Hollister guinea pigs are now either at the Cavy Spirit or the few listed here are in foster. The Cavy Spirit adoptable guinea pigs can be seen on this album. When Cavy Spirit has room, they will be moved from foster to Cavy Spirit. If you are interested in one of these guinea pigs, you can adopt them directly from the foster home, assuming you go through the Cavy Spirit adoption process. If you are interested in adopting, you should review our adoption criteria and complete an online adoption application found on the Adopting page. Please see Contact Us more information. We only do local (SF Bay Area adoptions). Additional photos of those that have already been adopted can be found on the Adopted album.

Hollister Rescue
19. Hollister Rescue  (July 2, 2002)
Hollister Guinea Pig Rescue (July 2, 2002) 187 guinea pigs were seized from a woman in Hollister on 7/2/02 by Animal Control Officers. She had been breeding them for 11 years. She "traded the babies to pet stores for food" -- presumably for money for food for herself (there were no other animals). They were housed outdoors, next to a trailer. The animal control officers found empty water bottles and empty food dishes and at least one dead guinea pig outside of the cages. As you can see, the technique used for cleaning cages was to throw new shavings on top of old shavings -- for a long time. In one cage, the pile of feces was so high, the hair on the backs of the pigs was poking through the rusted cage wire on the top of the cage as they walked along. The compacted feces and bedding was filled with maggots and worms and other gross stuff. HAC (Hollister Animal Control) also expects to find the carcasses of dead guinea pigs as they sift through the mountains of ancient bedding. The stink was overpowering. It took three HAC trucks to transport all the cages from the residence to the shelter. At the time of the seizure, she wanted her pigs back. And she wanted the officers to leave the cages and only transport them in small carriers. The pigs were supposedly fed rabbit pellets and vitamin C in the water. She has now officially surrendered the guinea pigs and we must find new homes immediately. As pregnant sows deliver, we expect the numbers to climb to 300+ guinea pigs very soon. Please visit the new HOLLISTER page for the latest information on the rescue and the status of the guinea pigs as well as how you can help.
