enlarge 102KB, 800x588 1 ka001 The Phelps Ridge route begins with a ford of Phelps Creek. Andrew and Shelby in foreground.
enlarge 108KB, 800x608 2 ka002 Danny and Eric at the Phelps Creek Ford. A little cool relief before the hot steep climb up the old abandoned sheepdrive over Phelps Ridge.
enlarge 118KB, 800x594 3 ka003 Its a long climb to the meadows and the old tread helps keep one on the right track. This camp is on the eastern side of Phelps Ridge. A few thunderclouds prompted Shelby to prepare a shelter for the night.
enlarge 90KB, 800x594 4 ka004 Entiat Ridge as seen from our camp on Phelps Ridge. My new "Lightyear" 1 man tent is in the foreground.

enlarge 128KB, 800x594 9 ka009 Leaving camp - Danny and Andrew.
enlarge 122KB, 800x598 10 ka010 Andrew & Danny.
enlarge 109KB, 587x800 11 ka011 Filling water bottles at stream in upper Phelps ridge meadows- Shelby, Chip, Eric, & Bill (on bank) Roger & Danny in foreground.
enlarge 119KB, 594x800 12 ka012 Shelby takes a break - The old tread can be seen just below the rockface above. It traverses the ridge but is lost in the meadows above.
enlarge 144KB, 587x800 13 ka013 Guys heading up to the old tread which follows the green belt up between the darker pines above the rocks.
enlarge 98KB, 594x800 14 ka014 Looking back down from the old tread - Bill is beginning the climb below.
enlarge 133KB, 587x800 15 ka015 Taking a break at the ridgetop - time out for a game of cards.
enlarge 120KB, 800x596 16 ka016 Shelby, Eric, roger the red, Danny, Chip, and Andrew (behind Chip)
enlarge 126KB, 594x800 17 ka017 Start of the "Bastard Miles" - descending the western slopes of Phelps Ridge.
enlarge 113KB, 800x587 18 ka018 Chip, Eric, Roger, Shelby, Andrew, and Danny - Following the old tread as long as we can.
enlarge 99KB, 800x599 19 ka019 Close up.
enlarge 104KB, 594x800 20 ka020 Buck Mountain from Phelps Ridge. - Andrew . After a long slog through the woods we finally come out into the meadows.
enlarge 132KB, 606x800 21 ka021 Close up of Andrew.
enlarge 119KB, 800x587 22 ka022 After a series of false trails we finally hook up to the old tread again and are soon just one basin over from the Red Mountain trail (I recognized it from our Sept 1999 trip to Chiwawa Basin).
enlarge 87KB, 800x594 23 ka023 Fortress Mountain looms over the Chiwawa valley. We camped here for the night - a beautiful spot not too disappointed that we hadn't made Massie Lake as Planned (across the valley and many "bastard" miles away.)
enlarge 77KB, 587x800 24 ka024 Andrew, Shelby, and Roger hiked up the old Red Mountain trail to find these old mining adits high up on the ridge.
enlarge 75KB, 594x800 25 ka025 Shelby inspects the old shaft.
enlarge 134KB, 587x800 26 ka026 Shelby and Roger hiking up to the top of the ridge from old mine site.
enlarge 92KB, 800x594 27 ka027 Chiwawa Mountain
enlarge 107KB, 800x582 28 ka028 Meadows below Red Mountain.
enlarge 136KB, 800x594 29 ka029 The Ridgetop is getting closer.
enlarge 104KB, 800x602 30 ka030 Roger pondering the route.
enlarge 94KB, 594x800 31 ka031 View over the edge - Spider Meadow is in shadow as the sun sets. Seven Fingered Jack and Mt. Maude crown Entiat Ridge across the valley.
enlarge 104KB, 800x602 32 ka032 Far below the foot of the Spider Glacier can be seen. We've been up that way many times before.
enlarge 75KB, 800x594 33 ka033 Andrew on Phelps Ridge above the Spider Glacier - Spider Gap can be seen beyond at the top of the Spider Glacier.
enlarge 85KB, 800x607 34 ka034 Close up of Andrew.
enlarge 52KB, 597x800 35 ka035 Looking southwest across the Chiwawa valley to Buck Mountain.
enlarge 96KB, 597x800 36 ka036 Danny crossing the Chiwawa River.
enlarge 133KB, 594x800 37 ka037 Bill's turn over the Chiwawa River. The footing is tricky.
enlarge 144KB, 800x594 38 ka038 Roger and Shelby elect to ford the stream rather than use the logs and branches.
enlarge 123KB, 800x603 39 ka039 Close up of Shelby and Roger. Just beyond the ford the old sheep driveway climbs very steeply up to Massie Lake.
enlarge 86KB, 597x800 40 ka040 Bill on his way up the Massie Lake Trail. Although the trail has been long abandoned, the old tread can still be followed. It is hard to believe that horses once used to use this trail it is so steep.
enlarge 118KB, 598x800 41 ka041 The old tread breaks out of the woods and at the top of this switchback, a spur trail leads around the shoulder for a quick descent to Massie Lake.
enlarge 84KB, 597x800 42 ka042 Danny and Andrew - Almost to the top.
enlarge 119KB, 597x800 43 ka043 Rounding the bend, Massie Lake comes into view - Danny and Andrew are almost there.
enlarge 105KB, 599x800 44 ka044 Close up showing Andrew and Danny below.
enlarge 32KB, 800x597 45 ka045 At sunset, we saw this unusual "cloud" - it was really the smoke from a large fire near Lake Chelan.
enlarge 115KB, 800x597 46 ka046 Breaking camp at Massie Lake - This is a very beautiful lake with nice campspots.
enlarge 81KB, 597x800 47 ka047 Andrew - ready to move out.
enlarge 136KB, 800x594 48 ka048 Chip, Eric, Danny, Roger, Shelby and Andrew - Ready to leave Massie Lake.
enlarge 118KB, 800x593 50 ka050 Close up of the Kickass Trekkers.
enlarge 98KB, 800x584 51 ka051 Danny on Massie Lake High Route above Massie Lake.
enlarge 96KB, 587x800 52 ka052 Close up of Danny.
enlarge 73KB, 597x800 53 ka053 Bill climbing up to ridge top above Massie Lake - Phelps Ridge is across Valley.
enlarge 97KB, 800x597 54 ka054 Breaktime - Chip, Eric, Andrew, Roger & Danny
enlarge 78KB, 800x597 55 ka055 Chip and Eric - the vague tread that brought us here peters out in the meadow beyond and we are on our own. Glacier Peak can be seen behind the trees to the left.
enlarge 87KB, 800x601 56 ka057 Andrew and Glacier Peak
enlarge 75KB, 597x800 57 ka058 Looking back to Red Mountain and Phelps Ridge. The old road/trail can be seen traversing the slope.
enlarge 67KB, 800x597 58 ka059 Close up of Chiwawa Mountain and Red Mountain.
enlarge 39KB, 800x597 59 ka060 Across the way is our route along the western side of Phelps Ridge. We crossed the ridge at the low point to the right of the photo.
enlarge 50KB, 597x800 60 ka061 Buck Mountain across the way.
enlarge 117KB, 598x800 61 ka063 Starting out - the tread soon disappears. We scouted ahead traversing across steep meadows and finally find a way down through the cliffs.
enlarge 133KB, 800x576 62 ka064 There appeared to have been some use of this shortcut through the rocks to the meadow beyond.
enlarge 118KB, 582x800 63 ka065 A steep descent down the meadow then a traverse to a large basin which was noted as a camp on the Routes and Rocks map had no water this year. We also pick up the vague tread again as it leaves the basin.
enlarge 57KB, 600x800 64 ka066 Buck Mountain slowly slips behind us as we traverse the ridge.
enlarge 69KB, 800x596 65 ka067 Andrew and Danny at one of the many basins along the route. Buck Mountain beyond.
enlarge 112KB, 800x594 66 ka068 Bill and Andrew ponder the route. The vague tread continues.
enlarge 77KB, 592x800 67 ka069 Danny traversing Massie Ridge. The High Pass route goes up the ridge across the valley.
enlarge 120KB, 598x800 68 ka070 Cascade Bill taking a break near the end of the days travel. Andrew got quite a laugh at the grizzled prospector look.
enlarge 92KB, 800x610 69 ka071 Close up of Bill
enlarge 79KB, 800x586 70 ka072 Quiet time in camp along Massie Ridge.
enlarge 87KB, 800x592 71 ka073 Hazy sky obscures the view to the east. We found that the haze was due to fires started by the thunderstorms our first night out.
enlarge 28KB, 800x586 72 ka074 Glacier peak from our camp after sunset.
enlarge 63KB, 592x800 73 ka075 The tread can be seen traversing the ridge. It dissapears for good when it drops into the meadows below Helmut Butte beyond.
enlarge 77KB, 800x586 74 ka076 Danny and Andrew disappear around the bend.
enlarge 82KB, 800x601 75 ka077 Andrew, Roger, Danny, Eric, and Shelby - taking a break along trail to High Pass above Buck Creek Pass. Helmut Butte in background.
enlarge 47KB, 800x592 76 ka078 Cascade Bill along trail to High Pass.
enlarge 50KB, 800x603 77 ka079 Closeup of Bill
enlarge 52KB, 800x586 78 ka080 Danny along Trail to High Pass - the Massie Lake High Route followed the benches of the ridge across the valley.
enlarge 46KB, 800x592 79 ka081 Looking across the valley at our route of the day before.
enlarge 48KB, 800x580 80 ka082 Massie Lake High Route follows the benches of the ridge across the Buck Creek Valley. Note Seven Fingered Jack and Mount Maude in the hazy distant ridge.
enlarge 61KB, 800x592 81 ka083 More of the Massie Lake High Route
enlarge 59KB, 800x580 82 ka084 Our camp was in the first small meadow above the forest on the left.
enlarge 84KB, 604x800 83 ka085 Andrew along trail to High Pass - this route was constructed to be part of an alternate of the Cascade Crest Trail on the east side of Glacier Peak. That project was abandoned and the trail dead ends at a pass near Triad Lake.
enlarge 80KB, 592x800 84 ka086 Andrew heading up the trail which ends at the saddle above. The trail is not maintained and there are a couple of spots where you need sure feet and a calm head.
enlarge 62KB, 580x800 85 ka087 Looking back along trail - Bill has almost made it to the saddle.
enlarge 51KB, 592x800 86 ka088 Andrew above Triad Lake.
enlarge 74KB, 800x603 87 ka089 Closeup of Andrew and Triad Lake.
enlarge 52KB, 580x800 88 ka090 Guys taking a break at viewpoint above Triad Lake.
enlarge 87KB, 800x594 89 ka092 The constructed trail ends at the saddle below, but a crude boot track contrinues up the next hill to High Pass. (Danny and Roger)
enlarge 63KB, 800x580 93 ka097 The old "bootworn" track is very steep. The guys are near the top of the first section.
enlarge 85KB, 592x800 94 ka098 High Pass lies at the head of this snowfield. We thought we would be able to cross this because of the low snowpack but the snow field blocked our progress and we would have to return to Buck Creek Pass to camp.
enlarge 41KB, 580x800 95 ka099 Triad Lake - Danny and the guys went down for a swim. Brrrr!
enlarge 50KB, 800x601 96 ka100 Andrew - Ready to head back to Buck Creek Pass.
enlarge 56KB, 800x592 97 ka101 Bill - if only we could get over that snowfield and down the Napeequa. Not this year. (Shelby and Danny below are returning from side trip to Triad Lake)
enlarge 27KB, 800x604 98 ka102 Andrew
enlarge 81KB, 800x601 99 ka103 Back down the Trail.
enlarge 49KB, 800x598 100 ka104 Andrew at camp at Buck Creek Pass.
enlarge 88KB, 606x800 101 ka105 Roger getting ready for the hike out to the car.
enlarge 69KB, 598x800 102 ka106 Chip putting the tent away for the last time on this hike.
enlarge 56KB, 800x600 103 ka107 During the night, the onshore flow brought a sea of clouds in from the west blanketing Buck Creek Pass in fog and mist. Buck Creek Pass is on the Cascade Crest and on the east side of the pass the fog gives way to sun and clear skies - a most unusual sight.
enlarge 80KB, 598x800 104 ka108 Shelby and Roger - ready for the Fatburger at the end of the trail.
