Georgian Eye Miniature
Circa 1840

Superb and rare eye miniature painted on ivory of a child's half face painted in the clouds.  Set in high carat gold.  Inscribed to reverse : Isa Murray 1810 Married Jas Denniston 1835.  Most likely a child of this marriage who died.

We were not able to open the brooch as it has been soldered shut....

A learned group specializing in portrait miniatures believes this is a girl and the artist may be John Cox Dillman Engleheart (1784-1862), nephew of George Engleheart.

WMF Beads
WMF [Wuttembergisches Metallwarenfabriek]
Circa 1930

From a private collection where they have been for the last 30 years, a rare strand of Myra iridescent glass beads from the German firm of WMF [Wuttembergisches Metallwarenfabriek], circa 1930. Essentially a firm specializng in Art Nouveau metalwork, WMF produced superior iridescent glass items from 1926 - 1938. The WMF designer Karl Weidman, using the same techniques as Tiffany used in their iridized glass, created the Myra Kristall range which went into production in 1926. The glass was covered in a thin layer of silver and etched with iridescent metal salts. This resulted in a peacock green/ blue and golden luster with a matte finish. As an added decorative effect the glass was blown out to achieve a slightly crazed surface. When lit from behind, Myra glass is always recognizable from its honey color. This large, graduated strand of WMF beads is strung on original silver chain with original spacers, in the w...

Stella Maris Memnto Mori

Unusual memento mori pendant for lives lost at sea - a watercolor miniature on parchment, under crystal and set to a gold pendant, circa 1720. The miniature is of Stella Maris, protectress of mariners and seafarers. She is portrayed in her lapis blue robe covered in golden stars and wearing a golden starburst crown. The skull, urn and crucifix in the scene symbolize souls lost at sea. The pendant measures 3 cm by 3.8 cm [ 1 and 1/4 inches by 1 and 1/3 inches] and is in excellent condition. A finely executed and unusual mourning miniature.

Stella Maris is an aspect of the Christian Virgin Mary as spiritual guide. She is called Mary, Star of the Sea, and protects those who make their living on the oceans such as mariners and seafarers. She is shown on a lunar crescent wearing a starry crown, Her typical iconography, which likely references Revelations 12:1 of the Bible, which describes "a woman... with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garl...

Memorial Ring for Major Francis Peirson -- Hero of the Battle of Jersey
Dated 1781

A white enamel and gold mourning band of unusual ridged construction, dated 1781. The ring is historically significant, inscribed: In Memory of Major Fra. Peirson Died at Jersey 6 Jan 1781 Ae : 24.

Major Francis Peirson, born in Yorkshire, entered the British army at a young age and rose to the rank of major by April 1780. On January 5th 1781 he was stationed in Jersey, when a French army landed on the island and marched on the capital, St. Helier. The young major led the British defence and at the moment of British victory Peirson was killed by a musket ball through the heart. He was immediately avenged by his black manservant, Pompey, who killed the major's French attacker. Peirson became a posthumous hero, akin to Nelson, for his heroic actions and for saving England from a humiliating defeat at the hands of the French. Poetic epitaphs were published in periodicals throughout the ...

Portrait of Major Frances Peirson

His death was immortalised in a painting by the American artist John Singelton Copley in 1783. His painting, The Death of Major Francis Peirson In The Battle of Jersey now hangs in the Tate Gallery London and when it was first exhibited in 1784 crowds turned out to view it.

Perison was buried with full military honours on Januray 10th 1781 in the church of St. Helier. The coffin plate on his tomb is inscribed ;

The remains of major Francis Peirson, who by his courage rescued the island of Jersey from the hands of a rapacious army on the 6th day of January 1781, are here deposited. He fell at the head of his conquering troops in the 25th year of his age.

Stuart Crystal -- James II Coronation Slide
Circa 1685

Rare Stuart crystal slide to commemorate the coronation of King James II of England [also James VII of Scotland] on 6th February 1685. James was the last Catholic monarch to reign over the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland. James's belief in absolute monarchy and the divine right of kings, along with his religious policies, made him unpopular and he was deposed in the Glorious Revolution in 1688. James fled to France where he spent the remainder of his life under the protection of his cousin and Catholic ally, Louis XIV. This watercolor on ivory portrait of the monarch, depicts him in full wig, armor and lace jabot, wearing the blue sash of the Order of the Garter. Two cherubs hover above holding aloft a crown. The iconography suggests that the divine right of kings was indeed divine, granted by God. The portrait is set under faceted rock crystal and to a gold slide. It measures one inch by 3/4 of an inch and ...

Crucifix with Christ
Spanish or Portuguese
17th century

As found in Joyaux Renaissance, Une Splendeur Retrouvee, by J. Kugel, photo 78.

Here is the French:

A rough translation from the French:

The Latin cross triangular sections are decorate...
