Gaylord Silvercraft
The Gaylord Silvercraft workshop was part of the Gaylord Farm Sanatorium, Wallingford, CT, run by the New Haven County Anti-Tuberculosis Association.

The following information is taken from an annual report for Gaylord Farm Sanatorium for 1923.

The silver working was done as part of the vocational training and occupational therapy for the tuberculosis patients. After the Federal Board for Vocational Education ceased funding this work at Gaylord, the board feeling that the silverwork would pay for itself persuaded Mrs. W. W. Dodge, Jr. of Meriden to come on board at a nominal salary to develop this workshop.

Mr. W. W. Dodge was one of the U.S. servicemen who was at the sanitorium during WWI, assigned by the War Risk Insurance Bureau. He also, as well as his wife, gave great assistance to setting up the workshop, in fact giving many of the designs that were made into silver pieces by the workshop.

The workshop was founded in 1923 and ended in 1944.  The hallmarks for Gaylord Silvercraft are   "Sterling," a hammer with wings, "G.S."  and "handwrought."

I recently purchased a "Gaylord Silvercraft" labeled paper box. It contained six sharp metal picks with plastic handles. The box is 5 5/8 by 2 1/4 inches and 3/4ths inches deep. I'm not sure what the picks are for. The handles are 2 1/2 inces long.
The medal is 2 inches long. It is curvedat the handle on both sides and at the tip.  I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you. Glenda

I have a gaylord silvercraft cuff bracelet that is very similar to the one shown, but it has no monogram, just a constant floral pattern. I always thought this was an early American piece, but I was so excited to research the maker. I got this bracelet 40 years ago. Do you have any idea of the value? would not sell it, but am curious given the rarity of these pieces.

Two sterling bracelets

The Gaylord Farm Sanatorium was originally a hospital for tuberculosis patients.  A silversmithing course was started in 1925 and closed operations in 1944.  There were 139 different types of items cataloged.  Over the years, 481 patients worked 100,187 hours to produce the 28,990.5 (don't know about this .5 item?) items which were sold in the Gaylord Silversmith Shop.

The Gaylord mark is a hammer with wings on each side (the hammer looks like a T) and HANDWROUGHT STERLING.

My sweet guy Roger found these!
