The Easton glacier formed this gigantic moraine as it pushed downward.. it has since melted back in the last 100 yrs or so... leaving this 'trough'.. I'd estimate it 1/2 mi across

The lateral moraine left by the glacial forces..

It must have been an extraordinary glacier (as was the Roosevelt & Coleman glaciers on the north side, as seen in the Heliotrope Ridge hike).  In fact the Black Butes are what is left from the 'original' volcano which was gigantic.. Mt Baker is a secondary and much younger volcano

Look closely on the left side (enlarge to original).. there are 7 'dots' heading up the 'Roman Wall' to the summit.  I watched them for a while with some binos.. slow go
