Relic Gew 98 sniper's rifle -- came back from the Villers Brettonneux area of the Somme. Probably a casualty of the 1918 fighting.

This unnamed but certainly German scope came into my possession many years ago complete with a GR property tag around it. The range drum grads are suggestive of British military issue.

I've never seen a scope before or since like this one that fits the Long Lee...........

Can anyone shed any light on it?

The thing that looks like a schiessbecker on the Hi Turret isn't; it's a moderator & is rarer than the rifle. There are only line drawings of one in 'The German Sniper' by Senich.

The Holy Grail, at least for Canadians! Just wish I had the rifle that went under it. CNo67 telescope with rings & base.

The Evans scope regrettably had the 'feet' cut off the bottom of the rings long before I obtained it, though it is restorable (when I get around to it) & the bases are original.

Dear Sir,

I am impressed with the selection of rifle combinations, currently I have a small project for a 1915 SMLE and a Winchester A5 as I understand most of the WW1 sniper combinations were broken up and sights sold to the public after the war, obtaining a set of original Whitenead mounts would be a rare thing. However, are there any good quality reproduction mounts available and where or are there any drawing available to manufacture a set.Kind Regards John

Dear Sir !
A wonderful collection ! I have two Winchester A5 scopes and mounts looking for some bases. I love to have the SMLE Whitehead base mounts and something for the P14.
Any reproductions (or originals) available ?
Best Regards, Franz

Interesting items.  I have an original WW1 Marine 1903 Sniper / Competition rifle with the original Winchester A5 scope on it.  I am looking for a set of reproduction PPCo mounts to fit to my PPCo scope so it can be put on my rebuild SSA action/rifle.

Most intriguing! The LLE mystery scope is a little bit similar in concept to Dr. Common's (Swenson Plate 207) designed for the "special N.R.A. competitions. c. 1902". Perhaps another entrant? According to T. F. Fremantle "Book of the Rifle - 1901)p. 250 conditions included elevation out to 3,000 yards which would explain what looks like enormous range of elevation.

These pictures are great, I have been wanting to examine examples of the bases for fitting the Aldis scope with Purdie mounts onto the rifle and here it is!!!! Many thanks for sharing these photos with us.

Where did you find the Schalldampfer?  Are there any markings on it?  That is one of 3 variations that I have seen.  All  were ground dug and at least one was a lot roughr than yours.

Fascinating collection! I am a total neophyte to all the variety of sniper scopes, own only three: an Ajack, a #32 MKIII and an Aldis, all on their appropriate rifles. Kind gentlemen in he UK are refurbishing the #32MkIII and the Aldis, (w/Alex Martin mounts for my P 14 sniper). The appearance will remain the same. You must have started collecting many years ago. It is like digging for gold! The first miner on the scene gets the richest ore. Your pictures are fascinating, and I appreciate your sharing them with the rest of the shooting community.  Kari

Absolutely awesome collection. I can only image the time, effort, and resources needed to amass and maintain such a collection. Kudos to all involved in this project!
