I was aboard the USCGC EASTWIND W279 while undergoing repairs for a ship fire. We were tied up behind the ALBACORE at the Portsmouth yard for a couple of months, and could not find out anything about the sub in front of us. While sitting in a barber shop I had the oppertunity to read the article in Collier’s Magazine. I would have been proud to have been a crew member of that sub. I will be visiting the Albacore Park. - Lee Grant, Thu, 21 Oct 2010 11:15AM
My father was on the albacore from Dec 1953 to march of 1955 as an ET1(ss)he worked in the radio room. I have his ash tray made of pewter that has the subs and his name on it...only other ones I've seen are in the museum...Dad passed 5 years ago...I miss him greatly...I only have one navy photo of him...I would like to find someone that knew him or has photos?? His name is Elmer J Winters, jr - Holly Winters, Tue, 18 Aug 2009 1:34PM
My Dad worked on building the Albacore.Dad worked in shop38. He started working at the shipyard in 1951. He is 94 a still living. I will be making photo copies of these great pictures, and taking them to him. I know he will really enjoy them. I had the plesure to vist the ship back in the 90's on a trip to Portsmouth. Thanks for having such a great site. Joe Preston - Joe Preston, Sun, 8 Feb 2009 7:47AM
Great photos, I was on Nautilus (SSN571) in the yards at Portsmouth in 1967-68 and remember her fondly. Great boat, great crew even if they were diesel boat sailors. Great web site. - Bruce Kinne, Mon, 6 Oct 2008 1:05PM
